is pleasing in God's sight!3 The Bible tells us God
ordained in advance every good work we would
ever do.4 The apostle Paul confirms this when he
says God called him by grace and set him apart
from his mother’s womb.5 The point is God does
not call us on account of our good deeds or our
moral lives. He calls us by grace alone!—a
supreme comfort to our disquieted souls.

Christ Alone
Pinocchio did get one thing right, however. If we
want to live—truly live—we have to die. In losing
his life, the puppet found it, and so do we.1 This
also Christ accomplished for us, leaving us His
example: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is
no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.
And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in
the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself
for me.”2
Christ lived the life we could never live and died
the death we could never die in order that we, by
faith, could be freed from the burdens of sin and
the law.3 In this way, the Gospel deprives men of
all glory and gives it solely to God. It is Christ
alone, apprehended by faith, that constitutes
Christian righteousness. And once we have been
set free from self-centered, self-righteous
pursuits, Christ empowers us to live cross-
centered lives,4 serving Him and others in love.5
Like the little wooden boy, we have been born
into a certain nature which we are powerless to
change.6 Sin quickly seduces us with promises of
fame and luxury, but in the end leaves us slaves
to our folly. The unregenerate, like puppets, put
on a good show, but apart from God remain
dead in their trespasses.7
Yet, by the gift of God’s grace, we are awoken
unto faith.8 We become a new creation!9 We
share in our Father’s happiness and enjoy our
adoption as sons and daughters into His heavenly
home! Therefore, let us sever the ties of legalism
