AWARENESS

FOR
SPECIAL
CHILDREN
Summary:

My 12 days’ project under the NGO-CSR internship was with Beautiful

Tomorrow Foundation’s School/NGO- Satish Haware Divyang Center, school
for special kids located in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. Divyang Center provides
quality education to children with developmental disorders like Autism
Spectrum disorder, ADHD, Dyslexia, Down Syndrome, Global Development
Delay, Language and Speech Delay, Cerebral Palsy, and Mental Retardiation.
To cure these mentioned disorders, Divyang center provides Communication
and language achievement therapy services, Remedial Education Services,
Sensory Integration Therapy Services, and Vocational Training Services for the
betterment of special children. The purpose of this internship was to understand
the role of Divyang Center in social welfare and development of special
children and to learn management practices at Divyang. The theme of the
project was to sensitize towards understanding the needs of the underprivileged
section of the society, i.e. special kids or children suffering from various
disorders and disabilities. Basically, the idea was to understand an area of
special children and most importantly, it was to recognize the global problem of
lack of awareness for special children and how the problem can be reduced. For
the same purpose, I visited different places in a week for creating awareness of
special kids and promoting admissions for Divyang Center. We gave a Street
Play to general public at respective visits about Divyang Center to encourage
their involvement in understanding the special needs of children and of special
education programs. Divyang Center provides an appropriate educational
program and as necessary, related services for each child with a disability
requiring special education, from age six to fifteen through Divyang Center’s
outreach support and education services. The conclusion of this
project/internship was found to be a great learning experience, i.e. to having a
proper understanding of the managerial role in a non-governmental
organization. I am grateful to my NGO guide, Dr. Chetana Patil for her
continuous support on work. There are approximately 116 students in Divyang
Center hence, to promote education for special kids increasingly, the NGO
should collect more funds or get more support from Beautiful Tomorrow
Foundation to be financially efficient to run the school on a bigger platform.

Student Project Activities

Theme of the project

❖ The assigned 12 days’ project under the NGO-CSR internship to me was

with Beautiful Tomorrow Foundation’s eminent School/NGO- Satish
Haware Divyang Center, school for special kids located in Kharghar,
Navi Mumbai.
❖ The theme of the project was to prepare a Street Play for creating
awareness for kids with special abilities and perform it in public places
like Stations, Malls etc. Basically, the idea was to understand an area of
special children and most importantly, it was to recognize the global
problem of lack of awareness for special children and how the problem
can be reduced.

❖ The motive was to broaden the vision impinging upon the growth of
special kids in the Indian society and thereby, to help them fulfil their
special needs.

Daywise Work:

DAY 1: We had our orientation and the groups were divided according to
interests. Further, out of 34 students in Street Play, we were divided into 2
groups viz. Vashi Group And Panvel Group. We selected Panvel Group.
Also the leaders of each group are allotted.

DAY 2: We prepared certain scripts. We allocated the jobs for diffenet roles to
different students after finalising the script. We practised for the same.

DAY 3: We finalised everything, did our final practice and showed it to

Chetana Ma’am and Charu Ma’am. Also we discussed our final schedule of
the places that we were gonna perform.

DAY 4: We went to get permissions from different places for performing our
street plays.

DAY 5: We performed at Panvel Station.

DAY 6: We performed at Orion Mall, Panvel.

DAY 7: We performed at ITM Business School, Kharghar.

DAY 8: We performed at Mansarovar Station.

DAY 9: We performed at Central Park alongwith Vashi Group.

DAY 10:

DAY 11: W performed at Little World Mall, Kharghar along with Vashi Group.

Project Objectives

❖ To provide an appropriate educational program and as necessary, related

services for each child with a disability requiring special education, from
age six to fifteen through Divyang Center’s outreach support and
education service
❖ To provide activities that foster social development and, to the maximum
extent possible, assimilation into community activities like dance and
musical competitions
❖ To provide to each resident preschool child, identified as having a
disability, the opportunity to pursue education by admission in Divyang
Center at reasonable cost and the appropriate particular services
according to the child’s special needs
❖ To provide a coordinated and comprehensive instructional program from
Kindergarten through other classes according to the potential
development of special children
❖ To provide appropriate related services to the students with disabilities as
needed
❖ To encourage parental involvement and understanding of special
education programs
❖ To provide appropriate vocational services to students with disabilities
❖ To provide transition services and develop a post secondary school plan
for each student with a disability

Major Activities

In the project, the major activities can be classified as follows:

❖ Directing and Coordinating the Street play.

❖ Leading the group and maintaining the teamwork and decorum.
❖ Promoting and creating awareness for special kids by visiting public
places and performing street play supporting our cause. My group and I
visited the following places for the same purpose which are as follows:
● Panvel Station
● Orion Mall

learn better.

their school for special kids after creating awareness and promoting the
school for special children with special needs to be fulfilled
❖ Meticulous premises of Divyang Center at the end of the project

Conclusion and Recommendation

The conclusion of this project/internship was found to be a great learning

experience, i.e. to having a proper understanding of the managerial role in a
non-governmental organization. I am grateful to my NGO guide, Dr. Chetana
Patil for her continuous support on work. There are approximately 116 students
in Divyang Center hence, to promote education for special kids increasingly, the
NGO should collect more funds or get more support from Beautiful Tomorrow
Foundation to be financially efficient to run the school on a bigger platform.
According to me, the key to success of this project to create awareness for
special kids was dedication of my mentors at NGO, Charu Ma’am, Swati
Ma’am, and Chetana Ma’am who helped me continuously with every task and
queries. However, I would like to recommend that the staff and non-staff at
Divyang Center School should work with more coordination with one another to
avoid chaos and mismanagement. The NGO is focussed on special kids’ rights
and through Divyang Center School, special kids are able to gain access to
education and a better living at reasonable cost (not more than 300 per month)
with all requirements in hand which the families of special kids could otherwise
hardly afford. Though I believe that there are many special children whose
families or acquaintances cannot even afford such reasonable fee thus, Beautiful
Tomorrow foundation should plan or try bringing the services free for special
kids or they can also create some quota for poor/unpreviliged families. During
the school visits, I discovered that there are 125 million children who are
disabled belong to developing countries and there are more than 600 million
special children in the world posing a great problem in the societal
development. Whereas, there are only 116 students in Divyang Center School
hence, Beautiful Tomorrow Foundation should take steps to provide education
to and cover at least one-fourth of special kids of 125 million disabled children.
Apart from these points, Divyang Center is doing a great job as per I have
learned from this project under my NGO Internship.

Learnings accumulated

From project/internship journey at Divyang Centre as an intern, I learned the

following values and insights:

● Empathy towards society: I personally could have a soft heart for special
kids and their families
● Learning & Knowledge: I gained knowledge about child disabilities and
how the world could be made better for them
● Interpersonal skills: I developed interpersonal skills as to promote my
ideas effectively and to get the work done through communication
● Leadership: I developed leadership skills when I was elected as the group
leader where I was accountable for various responsibilities assigned by
my mentor, Chetana Ma’am.
● Time management: As the time was less and the work were more, I learnt
to develop time management skills as the task was to be completed
efficiently and I learnt to improvise with full punctual spirit.
● Organizational: I learnt organizational skills as the data was vast and
hence, allocation, i.e. organizing was essential to complete the work
effectively.
● Social Responsibility: I find myself more responsible socially after this
week internship at Divyang Centre.
