JULY 17, 2019

GRADE 8 RESPONSIBILITY 5:50 AM – 6:50 AM
GRADE 8 CHARITY 6:50 AM – 7:50 AM
GRADE 8 UNITY 7:50 – 8:50 AM

I. OBJECTIVES

a. Students should be able to identify the properties of sound.

b. Students should be able to Investigate the demonstrate the difference between
refraction and reflection of sound using the illustrations.
c. Students should be able to appreciate how reflection and refraction is being used in
their daily endeavors.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

III.
SCIENCE 8 – PROPERTIES OF SOUND
Teacher's Guide Pages 55-56
Learner's Materials Pages 94-97

IV. PROCEDURE

A. PREPARATION
 Greetings
 Prayer
 Classroom management
 Ice breaker

B. MOTAVITION

 Review of the previous lesson “The speed of sound an temperature”

What happens to the speed of sound when the temperature increases? What
about when it decreases?

C. DISCUSSION

 Why do lots of people love to sing inside the bathroom?

 Why do you think open field concerts are usually held during nighttime?
Waves have some common properties. The study of the properties of sound waves is
called acoustics. Sound waves are reflected when they hit a barrier.

Reflection of sound waves off of surfaces is also affected by the shape of the surface. A
flat or plane surfaces reflect sound waves in such a way that the angle at which the wave
approaches the surface equals the angle at which the wave leaves the surface.

Reflection of sound waves off of surfaces can lead to one of two phenomena - an echo or
a reverberation. Multiple reflections are called reverberation. A reverberation often
occurs in a small room with height, width and length dimensions of approximately 17
meters or less. This best fits the bathroom which enhances the voice.

Refraction of sound on the other hand is describe as the change in speed of sound when it
encounters a medium of different density. Sound travels faster in hotter media. This
change in speed of sound during refraction is also manifested as sort of “bending” of sound
waves.

D. APPLICATION

 Use the concept of reflection and refraction to explain the pictures

E. GENERALIZATION

Refraction of waves involves a change in the direction of waves as they pass from one
medium to another. Refraction, or bending of the path of the waves, is accompanied by a
change in speed and wavelength of the waves. So if the media (or its properties) are
changed, the speed of the wave is changed.

V. EVALUATION
Direction: Choose the best answer among the 4 choices.

1. An echo occurs when sound

A. is transmitted through a surface.
*B. is reflected from a distant surface.
C. changes speed when it strikes a distant surface.
D. all of the above

2. The change in direction of a sound wave around corners is

called
A. diffraction B. interference
*C. refraction D. Interference

3. You can hear noises a long distance away over water at night
because
A. of lowered temperature.
B. water conducts sound better at night.
C. sound is reflected off water more efficiently at night.
D. of refraction of sound in air.

4. The method of detecting the presence, position and direction of

motion of distant objects by reflecting a beam of sound waves is
known as _____.
A. RADAR B. SONAR
C. MIR D. CRO
