This article reviews literature related to online learning and teaching. It provides a brief history of online education and describes the unique aspects of online teaching and learning, as well as barriers to online teaching. The article also discusses new faculty roles in online environments and implications for online learning. Major results from the literature include that online teaching platforms and websites are commonly used in Chinese universities. Teaching print, broadcast, and online journalism concurrently can assess curriculum convergence. Social learning platforms and flipped classrooms are also discussed. The article recommends further research with student populations to determine learning style differences between online and traditional students, and how the quantity of online courses taken may impact success. As online teaching and learning continues to evolve, student grades may improve.
