WVSU MEIL Principal Internship Standard Summary

STANDARD #_7 – Professional Community for Teachers & Staff
Standard 3 concerns the areas of professional community for teachers and staff. The

standard states, “Effective educational leaders foster a professional community of teachers and

other professional staff to promote each student’s academic success and well-being.” I have met

this standard by participating in and completing the activities discussed below.

Overview/Summary of Activities

 Standard Activity 7.32C – This activity provided me with the opportunity to meet with

grade-level “team leaders” or department chairs and explore what they do to help the

administration in the building and keep their teams going. I was able to offer

recommendations in giving them more responsibilities in the building.

Key Learnings from the Experience

I learned that it is always important to show you trust your staff and that they are

appreciated. The “team leaders” hold a great deal of responsibility, yet do not always feel that

their thoughts and opinions matter. The work extremely hard to meet the expectations of the

administration, and would like more “power.”

Area(s) Needing Further Experience and Improvement

I would like to know more about how the administration designates responsibilities

throughout the staff members, including team leaders. I feel that this standard is critical in having

a well-functioning school atmosphere, so I would like more experience concerning this standard

in general.
