WVSU MEIL Principal Internship Standard Summary


STANDARD #_8 – Meaningful Engagement of Families &
Community
Standard 8 concerns the areas of meaningful engagement of families and community. The

standard states, “Effective educational leaders engage families and the community in

meaningful, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial ways to promote each student’s academic

success and well-being.” I have met this standard by participating in and completing the

activities discussed below.

Overview/Summary of Activities

 Standard Activity 8.33B – This activity allowed me to create a written communication to

send out to the public about the open house East Bank Middle School will be holding

prior to the start of school. The plan is for this to also be a community night in which

people can come in and learn more about the school, its faculty, staff, and coaches.

 Standard Activity 8.33C – This activity allowed me to talk with a few people concerning

who or what the most influential groups and individuals in the community are. I was able

to analyze the information I was provided with and offer reconditions for improving

relations with the public.

 Standard Activity 8.34A – This activity provided me with the opportunity to survey

parents concerning various aspects of our school. I was able to examine the results to

determine parent attitudes about the school.

 Standard Activity 8.34C – This activity allowed me to come up with ideas for improving

and increasing parent involvement at EBMS. I suggested that we extend communication


in more ways than the school’s Facebook and Schoology pages. This is partially due to

many of our students are being raised by grandparents which do not use social media, so

they are often not informed of events. I also suggested surveying parents and guardians to

see what they would be interested in if we were to have more activities at the school that

would interest them.

 Standard Activity 8.35A – This activity allowed me to compose a list of social agencies

that are available to provide help and support to students, faculty and administration at

EBMS.

Key Learnings from the Experience

I was able to learn more about the various agencies that provide support to EBMS

students, faculty, administration, and community. I’m sure this will prove to be extremely

helpful in the future. I was also able to determine and address the parent’s feelings toward the

school on multiple levels. This standard and all it entails plays a significant role in administration

and schools as a whole.

Area(s) Needing Further Experience and Improvement

I would like to gain more experience in playing a vital role in communicating with the

media and public as a representative of a school. I would also like more experience with putting

myself out there to and in the community as part of the school.
