CAVITE July 24, 2019 STEM 22

CULTURE

1. Beliefs

Cavitenos believe in many superstition beliefs. One of those are sweeping at night

brings bad luck. Even in funerals, Cavitenos believe that putting money at the hands of

their deceased family member will bring good fortune when they retrieve it before the

burial. Also, when the fiesta in Silang is coming, people believes that it is the signal of

summer season and the weather will get hotter. Recently, students in Cavite can forecast

a suspension even when there is just a little amount of rain.

2. Tradition

It is part of Cavite’s tradition to “mano/bless” to someone who is older to them

and “po” and “opo”. Cavite is also rich in various fiesta and festivals mostly feast day of

their patron saints such as Feast of San Agustin in Tanza, Santo Nino in Ternate, Santa

Maria Magdalena of Kawit, Santo Rosario de Caracol of Salinas, Virgin of Candelaria in

Silang and Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Porta Vaga. This represents how Cavitenos

are religious.

3. Landmarks

Cavite is the history capital of the Philippines. Wandering in Cavite will give you

a nostalgic feel of the place Cavite was once before. Exaples are Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo

Shrine were the independence took place, Corregior Island, House of Andres Bonifacio,

Battle of Binakayan Monument, Thirteen Martyrs Centennial Plaza. All of theses places

represent a history of the old Cavite.

4. Food

Cavite is rich in having varieties of foods. One of those are the famous Cavite

Breakfast known as “Tapsilog” thus making “tapsihan/tapsilogan” a good market in this

place. Oher Cavite Delicacies are Bacalao, Tamales, Kilawin, Pancit puso, Pancit De

Choca, Kalandrakas, Pochero con Sarsa, Pipian, Malabanos, Lumpia Fresca, and

Bibingkoy.

5. Music and Arts

Like other places with a touch of history within them, Cavite also offers having

Folk songs in its region. “Kanaryo” is one of the example. On the other hand, Cavite

doesn’t call vandalisms as “vandals”. Art in cavite is formed as street arts and artist

engaging in this kind of genre call themselves as “Cavity”- for becoming a dental aspect

of the streets in Cavite.

Reflection:

I’m a Caviteno since 2005, and in this year 2019, the culture and traditions practiced

since the beginning are still carried on by everyone. It is not dying as many people are still

engaging with it. It gives me a smile in the eye as the history that our fallen heroes fought for are

being recognized even up until now. It only shows how Cavitenos can preserve the culture they

are entrusted with. Let us continue to practice these kinds of unique aspects as we are who we

are with these characteristics, by this we can call ourselves as the one and only Cavitenos.
