PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
(see more on my VIT website -

Building respectful and strong relationships with students

➢ I loved being in Kelly’s classroom. There is a clear sense that it is a safe
environment and that she connects well with the students. She balances
humour so very well and the students respond to this. Even when dealing with
the potentially difficult topic of puberty, Kelly’s approach meant that students
felt comfortable. This is a credit to Kelly.
– Dr Deana Leahy (Senior Lecturer in Health Education, Monash University)

“Learning is a lifelong process. My role as an educator is understanding the students

come with diverse needs and learning styles. I believe in the importance of gaining
students’ trust and respect whilst instilling them with independence, self discipline,
values and confidence in their own abilities within a supportive and inclusive
learning environment. My mission is to empower young people to challenge
universal truths and societal norms. My aim as a teacher will be to build the critical
thinking and literacy skills of students so that rather than just being sponges of
knowledge, they can make decisions aside from the influences of society, the media
and other "norms. In my lessons critical literacy will underpin the content. I want
students to build skills that allow them to see through the media's persuasive
techniques, to recreate health and wellbeing messages for their peers and society
and to be able to walk out of my classroom at the end of the year and say that it was
different and empowering. I will not conform to relying solely on traditional teaching
styles as I want to provide engaging and worth while lessons for my students which
encourage them to think for themselves.”
