Chapter 1

The Problem and its setting

Abstract

This study will discuss the results of the tracer study of the College of Medical

Technology graduates of University of Perpetual Help System who graduated between

2013 and 2017. The main objective of this tracer study is to examine the changes in the

career pattern of the graduates in order to provide a basis of evaluation of the College

of the College of Medical Technology graduates of University of Perpetual Help System.

Introduction

According to Schomburg (2003), Institutions involved in developing human

resources through long and short term programs have the duty to keep track of the

performance of their graduates to determine accountability and whether or not their

programs have impacted on the individual, the institution, or the country. Tracer study

constitutes one form of empirical study which provides valuable information for

evaluating the results of the education and training of a specific institution of higher

education. This information may be used for further development of the institution in the

context of quality assurance.

2
COLLEGE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
Surveying graduates of the College will give rich experience about the

whereabouts of graduates, which might help to expand perspectives among

administrators, faculty and students. Such information like the income, economic sector,

current job title, working time, duration of search for the first job, methods of job search,

values develop and practice in work, skills acquired are relevant for higher education

institutions to note.

The University of Perpetual Help System continues to raise its educational

standards to produce graduates who are highly competent, efficient and competitive in

the labor market. The B.S. Medical Technology is now on its 10th year of operation in

the University. After a decade of offering the program, it already has produced batches

of graduates. Up until 2008, no tracer study on the medial technology graduates was

done. For this reason this tracer study will be done. The researchers will have this study

to determine whether the graduates have achieved the goals to acquire appropriate

skills, equipped with the knowledge and right attitudes necessary for medical technology

practice to be locally and globally competitive and whether it has effectively carried out

the vision and mission of the school.

According to Schomburg (2003), graduate and employer surveys constitute one

form of empirical study which can provide valuable information for evaluating the results

of the education and training of a specific institution of higher education. This

information may be used for further development of the institution in the context of

3
COLLEGE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
quality assurance. In addition Schomburg (2003) cited that a tracer study sometimes

also called as “alumni survey” or “follow up survey” should enable the institution of

higher education to get information to indicate possible deficits in a given educational

programme and to serve as a basis for future planning activities. Information on the

professional success (career, status, income) of the graduates are needed as well as

information on the relevance of knowledge and skills (relationship between knowledge

and skills and work requirements, area of employment, professional position). More so,

consequences of university expansion can be determined with respect to the

relationship between higher education and work through tracer studies (Teichler, 1981).

A study of Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin and Menteri Pengajian Tinggi

(2006) cited that Graduate Tracer Study has proven to be an effective method in getting

accurate and quick inputs for the purpose of ensuring the human capital produced by

higher education institutions are at all times relevant and be able to meet the ever

changing demand of job market.

3.3 SAMPLE OF THE POPULATION

The researchers selected accessible population for the study because of the reasonable

access and connections between the researchers and the respondents. A sample in this

study is a small group of elements drawn through a definite procedure from an

accessible population

The sample of the population of this stood at 10 Medical Technology Graduates from

Academic Year 2012-2013; 7 Medical Technology Graduates from Academic Year

2013-2014; 12 Medical Technology Graduates from Academic Year 2014-2015; 25

Medical Technology Graduates from Academic Year 2015-2016; 25 Medical

Technology Graduates from Academic Year 2016-2017 gave a total of 70 target

respondents.

3.4 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

A convenience sampling procedure was used to acquire participants in this study. This

technique is employed to the availability of the participants at a given time, or the

willingness to participate in the researchers study.

20
COLLEGE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
This is achieved by getting the list of graduates from school year 2013-2014 to school

year 2016-2017 in University of Perpetual Help DALTA - Calamba Campus. The

researchers traced the graduates and sent a survey questionnaire to the graduates

willing to give their opinion on the said survey.

3.5 INSTRUMENT FOR DATA COLLECTION

The survey questionnaire was used as the main data-gathering instrument for this

study. The online survey questions were sent to Medical Technology Graduates of

Academic Year 2013-2014 to 2016-2017 through electronic mail. The content of the

survey form was made based upon the needed information of the College of Medical

Technology to trace its graduates. The survey question contains the employment

characteristics and the relevance of the Medical Technology program and curriculum

that could improve the college.

The online survey form enabled the Medical Technology graduates to answer the

question at any given time of their availability. Furthermore, the survey questionnaire

allowed the research study to execute the quantitative approach necessary for the

interpretation of data.

3.6 VALIDATION OF QUESTIONNAIRE

21
COLLEGE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
The questionnaire designed for the study was subjected to a validation process. In the

validation process of the researchers study, copies of the questionnaire and copies of

the questions were given to Mrs. Josephine G. Maningas, Director of Student Personal

Services.

The director of Student Personal Services, Mrs. Maningas, went through the

researchers questionnaire to carefully ascertain the appropriateness and adequacy of

questionnaire made by the researchers. The validation was made in order to see:

• How the subject will react to the questionnaire;

• Whether the items are clear enough and easily understood;

• Whether there is the need to include more items in certain areas; or

• Whether there are some items to which they would not like to respond

• Determine the workability of the proposed method of data analysis for the study.

3.7 METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

There were seventy copies of the questionnaire given out and fifty two copies of

questionnaire were successfully completed and returned. The possibility of giving and

retrieving back all the questionnaire was as a result of the researchers colleagues who

offered a helping hand. The opposite could have been the case if the researcher had

22
COLLEGE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
taken the lonely task of going round the Hospitals of Laguna to collect the

questionnaire.

3.8 SUMMARY

The significance of this study aims to trace the employment status, the relevance of

Medical Technology course of study and the activities Medical Technology graduates

are currently engaged to. All data interpretations are stated in chapter 4 of this research

study.

7. SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

GRADUATES

Overall, the Medical Technology graduates recommend that the department of

Medical Technology should provide equipment enough for each student to experience

the actual processing of specimens. The lack of reagents must be given attention and

should have sufficient supply to enable the students to perform experiments for practical

learning. Improved facilities and equipment of the laboratory would give the students the

idea of what an actual laboratory set up is like. But other than the improvement of the

34
COLLEGE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
laboratory equipment, the Medical Technology graduates emphasizes that there should

be more seminars for the students to equip them with more knowledge and to orient

them about the topics and certain questions that might be asked in the Medical

technology licensure examination.

The professors play a big role in molding and guiding the students to become the

best Medical technologist and acts as a bridge for the students to achieve their dreams

and that is why the Medical Technology graduates expressed that the College of

Medical Technology should hire more professors to divide the workload for them to give

much better attention and focus on subjects that their students are having a hard time

because it would enhance the student’s skills and expertise not only on written but more

specially on practical techniques. Moreover, the Medical Technology graduates would

like the Department of Medical Technology to consider bringing back the 12 month long

internship program to let the students experience and familiarize their selves in the real

work of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
