Pe MALCO ENGINEERING J ‘Stockpile Weta preg tly Cer Storage piles or stockpiles exist because they represent an economical arrangement for storing large quantities of bulk solids. Some materials are easily reclaimable and readily flow into the reclaim tunnels below the stockpile without difficulty. Other materials, however, such as gypsum, coal wood chips, sulphur and limestone require assistance if they are to flow The STOCKPILE DISCHARGER (SPO) is a vibrating device which is buried underneath the stockpile. Its purpose is to initiate and maintain the flow of difficult materials. The discharger sends strong impulses up into the stockpile which overcome the “rat holing” or “bridging” tendencies of such materials. This induces a continuous flow of material down upon itself. It is generally greater than the material's natural angle of response. Internal friction angles of 60° are quite common and, for difficult materials, can be as much as 90°. Without the inclusion of an SPD, the volume of the “core” or “cone” established by the internal friction angle from the outlet is the maximum potential live capacity of the pile. Refer sketch. With materials which tend to “set” while in storage (e.g. gypsum) or those with a particle shape which tend to interlock (e.g. wood chips), even this potential is not likely to be achieved because the material will “arch” over the outlet. The Malco vibratory SPD is specifically engineered to provide more “tive” volume in a stockpile as well as initiating and maintaining flow. Many successful field installations have proven their The resistance to flow from stockpiles of certain materials has always been a problem. Too often only a small portion of the volume is withdrawable because the material “cores” directly to the top of the pile or “arches” over the withdrawal outlet. This “core” reflects the configuration of the withdrawal opening in the ground or tunnel below the pile and will always be near circular in cross section. Even if the opening is square or rectangular the diameter of the core will reflect the diagonal dimension of the opening. The volume of material which should be withdrawable from a stockpile can be assessed after determining the “internal friction angle” of the material being stored. This is the angle measured from the horizontal, at which the material will stide abitity to induce the maximum practical tive volume of material in the stockpile to flow on a continuous basis. The SPD will generate the draw down angle which for an uncompacted pile will be within 10 degrees of the natural angle of repose, thus dramatically increasing “tive” storage and eliminating flow problems. The SPD does not vibrate continuously as continuous vibrations would cause most bulk solids to “pack” and become dormant. Rather, the vibrating action is cycled, with an “ON” cycle of between 8 and 15 seconds and an “OFF” cycle of at least 120 seconds, thus inducing the material to flow rather than forcing it. This also minimizes the energy consumption of the system. The exciter assemblies can either be two (2) foot mounted D.1.P, unbalanced motors cr two (2) vibration proofed foot mounted D.LP, standard motors vee belt driving shafts with out-of-balance weights. Both options have the axis of rotation diagonally opposite and in the horizontal plane thus inducing a lift and twist action into the stockpile above. The vibrations are imparted to the stockpile via the draw down skirt and the internal pressure cone as they are both in contact with the material in the stockpile at all times. The draw down skirt is the top periphery of the cone. The internal pressure cone also serves the purpose of assuring maximum material draw dovin as its function is to open or enlarge the predominant flow stream in the pile and to relieve head load at the outlet. The vibrations are restricted to the SPD and the stockpile by the provision of solid rubber isolation mounts situated between the ground and the SPD. These isolators provide maintenance free operation and are readily accessible. The sealing arrangement consists of an inner rubber sock and a heavy cord reinforced outer skirt. These limit the possibility of product collecting around the rubber isolators ce se BOLTED BAR OUTER SHELO TO SUIT INSTALLATION. dek “+ NOTE: OMENSIONS © & D VARABLE EO] TR | BAC DAT OIC BAC BAY OY BR ea WORT weer | Power | oe | 8 fC] Oo LO [OR D8 Ta DPT OR [SUT YE TSN] RGR TB 7 ‘ = sis OUTPUT, (So-D) 28 iw [see eee [oe rom] a | se [re] em Tao] ase [we | ee [8 Hoey va 15 [ 2.6 aw [sre | ere Parse | 100 Tao | woo [2666] 080 oon [aon [azo [154s [08 e450 | 356.0" Adelaide Sydney Brisbone Perth Jakorta MALCO ENGINEERING PTY LIMITED ENGINEERING DIVISION 121 Regency Road, Croydon Park, S.A. 5008, Australia.
