Due to lack of nerve sensation, diabetic patients usually do not feel any pain due to abnormal
pressures under the feet, which may lead to ulcers, gangrene and eventual amputation. A
Pedograph gives an image of the pressure distribution under the feet revealing high pressure
regions at an early stage. Such detection can create awareness in patients to take preventive
measures. In advanced stages
special customized shoe
insoles can be prepared to
spread the pressure away
from the hot spots thus saving
the patient from eventual
amputation (called ‘off-
loading’).
Dynamic Pedograph uses an
optical method to create a
video image of the pressure
distribution of the foot as a
patient walks through the
sensor region in the centre of
a raised platform. Analyses of
these images using our
specially developed software
produces colour contour
images of the pressure
distribution under the moving
feet and colour graphs of
pressure variation against
time at 6 user-chosen points. The results can be printed on ordinary paper using a colour
printer. The images can be used to drive a computerized shoe insole maker, sent anywhere
using internet and saved for future reference or use. Again, pressure points and pattern may
differ while standing and during walking, usually it is the latter which put the soles on greater
burden, and a dynamic pressure measurement during walking has more importance from a
clinical point of view.
