Propeller shafts
This section includes information on propeller shafts and
their installation after alterations to wheelbases have
been made.

It is very important to select the correct type and length

of propeller shafts and that the angle between them lies
within a certain tolerance. Incorrect installation leads to
increased wear on propeller shafts, reduces the service
life of the driveline and reduces comfort.

Shafts in the vehicle

The propeller shafts used are C2055, C2060 and C2065.
They are provided with cross-toothed companion flanges
that can only be fitted together in one position. The
following tables indicate which type of propeller shaft
should be used.

PROPS-L C2060 450 2300 21083960 – 21084034
PROPS-XL C2065 475 2300 21082558 – 21082631
1 Propeller shafts are available in length increments of 25 mm from minimum length to maximum length. The part number gives the lengths of the shortest and
longest propeller shafts. All numbers in between are shafts of the same type but with different lengths. For example, part no 21078275 is a C2055 with support
bearing and 475 mm long. The part number is marked on the propeller shaft tube adjacent to one of the edges.

With splined joint

1 Propeller shafts are available in length increments of 25 mm from minimum length to maximum length. The part number gives the lengths of the shortest and
longest propeller shafts. All numbers in between are shafts of the same type but with different lengths. For example 21078275 is a C2055 with spline coupling
and 725 mm long. The part number is marked on the propeller shaft tube adjacent to one of the edges.

The propeller shaft with splined joint demands a working

length of 110 mm. This working length can be reached if
the dimensions in the tables above are fulfilled. Further,
this length can not be utilized to prolong the propeller
shaft at chassis alternation.

Propeller shaft dynamics

If the critical speed is reached the deflection of the
propeller shaft will dramatically increase until it finally
breaks, damaging the surrounding components and
structure.

Gearboxes with an overdrive (OD) have a shorter

maximum length of propeller shaft than direct drive (DD)
gearboxes.

Each vehicle specification is unique. The vehicle

dynamics depend on all components, which together
dynamically changes the characteristics . The masses
interaction and the structure stiffness decreas or increas
vibrations. This explains why no precise length is given
in the table.

For information regarding the recommended length

of propeller shafts, please use the “Propshaft layout”
function under “Order information” on the VBI site.

Installation
First bearing installation position (B)
The first bearing position is determined by the position
of the two supports fastened to the vehicle intermediate
crossmember.

Checking for tension in the bearing installation

WARNING
After carrying out work on the chassis or propeller
shaft, the bearing installations should be checked for
tension to avoid vibration and damage to the drive line.

If there is tension in the bearing installation the rubber

bearing retainer (indicated in the illustration) will be
deformed (curved outwards). To relieve the tension in the
bearing installation carry out the following:
1 Loosen the screws shown in the illustration and free
up the assembly.
2 Retighten the screws.
Torque tighten to:
M10 = 60 ± 15 Nm
M12 = 105 ± 25 Nm
M14 = 160 ± 32 Nm
3 Check the rubber bearing retainer and, if necessary,
repeat the procedure.
4 Repeat this procedure if necessary.

Vertical support (V)

The position is indicated by numbers that determine the
height of the intermediate bearing . This numbering may
vary from 1 to 15 (engraved on the support).

Note: The support P/N 3985106 is drilled from 1 to 12;

the support P/N 3985105 is drilled from 1 to 18.

Wedge angle in the rear axle

The variant indicating whether there are wedges or not
is located in the group "Frame, Springs, Wheels". For
certain combinations, it may be necessary to use wedges
for adjusting the rear axle inclination.

The variant indicating the installation of wedges is called

WEDGExy, where x indicates the wedge angle (it may
vary from 1° to 3°), and y indicates the installation
direction (P = positive, N = negative - refer to illustration).

If there is no need to use wedges, the variant will be

UWEDGE.

Example: WEDGE2N, which means that wedges of 2°, in

the negative direction, should be installed.

Structure of shaft
Propeller shafts are normally supplied with tubular
sections and companion flanges.

The propeller shaft should be assembled as described in

the Service Information, group 45, “Propeller shafts”.

Assembly
Lubrication
The universal spider joints are maintenance-free and
contain sealed-in grease.

Joint displacement
On a propeller shaft with sliding bearings, the front and
rear yokes should be in phase with each other, i.e. with a
relative displacement of 0°. This is the case with a single
propeller shaft and a rear propeller shaft on a multiple
propeller shaft.

T9008071

Companion flanges
Secure the flanges with M14 screws, grade 10.9. The
tightening torque must be 190 ± 20 Nm.

Part Part number

Screw 994102
Nut 25339078

Joint angles
The joint angle is the angle between the input and output
shaft on a propeller shaft.

The gearbox shaft is the input in the first joint. In the last
joint the joint angle is the one between the last propeller
shaft and rear axle inclination.

The joint angle should be minimum 0.5° and maximum

8.0°. If it is less than 0.5° the bearing races on the
spider’s needle bearings can be damaged. If the joint
angle is greater than 8.0° the flexural torque in the spider
will be so excessive that the service life of the driveline
will be reduced.

Measuring universal joint angles

Preparation
• The vehicle is positioned on a smooth and flat surface.
• Inspection and adjustment are conducted in the same
place. Do not move the truck when measuring it.
• Both an empty and a fully-loaded truck must be
measured.
• The trailing axle on bogie vehicles should be lowered.
• On 6x4 vehicles the tyres on the bogie should be of the
same type and manufacture, equally worn and have
the correct air pressure.
• The measuring points should be well cleaned.

Joint angles, vertical

The vertical angle can be measured with angle gauge
with a measuring accuracy of 0,5°.

If the shafts incline in different directions the vertical joint

angle is the total of the input and output shaft inclination.

T9006286

If they incline in the same direction it is equivalent to the

difference.
