3.8.2 Considerations
If you are installing FTE for a domain controller on a Honeywell-qualified platform running
Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Standard, then Honeywell recommends you to use the Experion
PKS System Initialization media for the operating system installation.
During the initialization steps, ensure FTE is selected for the network type and the NIC- FTE Yellow
is configured with at least one IP address, a subnet mask, and a default gateway. When selecting
the installation parameters for a clean operating system installation on the Network and
Input/Output Device Configuration dialog box. This is required while performing operating system
installation.
ATTENTION
Ensure that FTE is configured before promoting the server as a Domain Controller.

CONVERT A SUPERVISORY NETWORK TO AN FTE

NETWORK
Use the information in this section and the appropriate checklist from the sectionFTE Installation
and Configuration checklists to convert a supervisory network to an FTE network.
This conversion must occur before Experion release 4xx is installed on the nodes. Refer to the
procedures available in the Fault Tolerant Installation and Service guide for the Experion release
3xx being migrated from. Use the R3xx version of this guide for all of the steps and
recommendation prior to referencing this document.
l Supervisory network to FTE network considerations

l Identifying the specific conversion scenario

4.1 Supervisory network to FTE network considerations

First convert all nodes within the network to FTE nodes. Before conversion, refer to the Fault
Tolerant Ethernet Overview and Implementation Guide for detailed FTE network planning
information.
l Server and station conversion guidelines

l Special considerations for migrating a single ethernet platform

4.1.1 Server and station conversion guidelines

The following guidelines must be followed for server and station conversion.
l Each server must be converted at the same time as its redundant pair. Stations can be

converted individually.
l Each redundant server that has a dual ethernet configuration must have its links redefined

for a single network.

l Each redundant server must have its host file updated.

4.1.2 Special considerations for migrating a single ethernet

platform
If you are upgrading a platform that currently has a single NIC, replace the single NIC with a dual
NIC before starting a migration. Experion migration software looks specifically for a dual ethernet
configuration and if it is not detected, it stops the migration process. To avoid having a dual NIC
only for the migration process, perform the following:
- 33 -
CHAPTER

4
l Remove the dual NIC from the new platform and install it in the platform that is being replaced.
l Power-up the node being replaced and begin the migration process.
l After all the data on the node being replaced is backed up or migrated, shut it down and

remove the dual NIC.

l Re-install the dual NIC in the new platform and continue with the migration.

5.2.5 NIC connection requirements
Honeywell recommends you use a consistent strategy when placing the network cards in each
type of computer and when connecting the cables. The initialization and FTE driver software
always assigns the lowest MAC addressed port as the Yellow or A connection. This is also usually
the port labeled 1 or A on the physical connection to the either the dual NIC or the ports located on
the computer backplane. Honeywell recommends that the Yellow or A connection always be
connected to the physical port labeled 1 or A on the computer. This port has the lowest MAC
address.
5.3 Install the NIC
Perform the following procedure for installing the NICs.
l Purpose

l Install dual port NIC

5.3.1 Purpose
If the FTE NIC is not installed at the factory, use the procedures in this section to install and
configure the FTE NICs for your FTE node. For further information, refer to the vendor-specific
documentation.
In addition, refer to the following topics in Planning, Installation, and Service Guide, for further
information about the specific platform being installed.

l Specific Slot Requirements in Workstation Configurations section.

5.3.2 Install dual port NIC
Use this procedure to install the NIC in the PCI slot. If necessary, refer to specific platform
hardware manual for information on the available PCI slots.
TIP
Before installing the NIC, review all documentation packaged with the dual port NIC,
including the Quick Start Guide.
1. Identify the “ACT/LINK A” and “ACT/LINK B” ports on the NIC.
ATTENTION
The ACT/LINK A port is closest to the middle of the card.
TIP
Although the next two steps are optional, it is required to know the physical
ethernet address used for each port on the NIC. Based on the physical ethernet
address, review the MAC address table in the Switch Configuration menu to identify
the associated switch and dual adapter ports.
- 42 -
2. Locate and record the NIC’s label containing the 12-digit, hexadecimal physical ethernet
(MAC) address.
ATTENTION
This address applies to Port “A” (ACT/LINK A) on the NIC.
3. Increment the address for port “A” by 1 to derive the physical ethernet (MAC) address for port
“B”, and record the value.
4. Install the dual port NIC in the proper slot using the instructions in the Installation Guide
packaged with the device.
5.4 Install or update NIC drivers
Perform the following procedure for installing or updating the FTE NIC driver.
Honeywell recommends to use the NIC drivers provided in the Experion PKS System Initialization
media or download the latest version from the Honeywellprocess.com website. Refer to the latest
Experion PKS General Release SCN for driver updates.
Determine which manufacture of NICs is installed on the computer and perform either the Intel or
Broadcom procedure for driver installation.
