≪Guide for Creating a Field of Study and Research Plan Sheet/作成要領≫

(1) As this sheet is one of the most important references for selection and university placement, outline your field of study and specify your
research theme and plan in line with the following items 1 and 2. If plagiarism or fraud is discovered after selection, the selection will
be cancelled retroactively.

1. Past and present field of study(これまでの専攻分野)

First of all, I took Ocean (Offshore) Engineering Major which mainly studied the hydrodynamics and strength of offshore
structures. The research that I have done for the purposes of my final project was Design and Strength Analysis of Collar
Cage Aquaculture Structure Model. In this project, I calculated the tension, static strength, and fatigue life of the offshore
structure due to fluctuating environmental load, in this case, the collar cage aquaculture.

Secondly, I am currently employed at PT. Citra Mas, a Marine and Offshore Consultant as a junior engineer. Up until now,
I already participate in two projects namely Combo Dock Integrity Check and Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) AA
Integrity Check. These projects objectives are calculating and analyzing the strength and reliability of the marine
structures that currently used by oil and gas industry operator.

In conclusion, based on my previous project and experience on offshore structures integrity check, I think more in-depth
research is necessary as the marine industry is constantly growing around the globe and Japan is no exception. This
research can lead to the improvement of s7afety and reliability of the offshore structures which also help the development
of the marine industry as well by reducing the risk of environmental, human, and economic loss.

2. Research theme and plan in Japan(渡日後の研究テーマ及び研究計画)

Describe articulately the research theme and plan you wish to carry out in Japan. Specify particularly the ultimate goal(s) of your research in

Japan.(日本において希望する研究テーマ及び研究計画を明確に記入すること。特に研究の最終目標を具体的に記入すること。)

(1) Research theme(研究テーマ)

-1-
The research theme I want to do in Japan is the structural and hydrodynamic analysis of Very Large Floating Structure
(VLFS).

(2) Research plan(研究計画)

Background
One of the recent development of marine technology is the development of large scale floating structures or also referred
to as Very Large Floating Structure (VLFS). This structure can be applied for floating airport, port facility, bridge, etc.
Moreover, VLFS technology also may be used to create extra space off the coast and deal with the scarcity of land
experienced by several countries such as Japan, Singapore, and Monaco [1].
Due to its larger size compared to other conventional floating structures, VLFS have higher potential risk especially the
structural failure aspect. The structural failure of VLFS can cause massive economic, human, and environmental loss and
even can lead to worse consequence when it sinks or drifts after the structural collapse [2]. Therefore, the structural and
hydrodynamic analysis of VLFS need to be carried out.

The traditional hydrodynamic method for the prediction of the hydrodynamic response of VLFS is inaccurate as it omits
the effects of the structure deformation by taking rigid body assumption [3]. The most extensive theory to study VLFS
hydrodynamic response is the hydro-elasticity theory that considers the interaction between inertia, elastic and
hydrodynamic forces, and to solve the hydrodynamic response by combining hydrodynamic equations and structural
dynamic equation [4].

VLFS may undergo buckling and yielding under rare and extreme waves before the cross-section of the VLFS collapses
completely [5]. When collapsed, it experience plastic and elastic deformation. This deformation interact with the fluid
around it and referred to as hydro-elastoplasticity [6]. This method should be considered when performing the structural
analysis of VLFS.

Objectives
To study the structural strength and hydrodynamic behavior of VLFS to ensure its safety and reliability.

Scope
The scope of the research are calculating the structural strength and discovering the hydrodynamics characteristic of
VLFS.

Methodology
1. Literature Study
2. Structural Modeling
3. Hydrodynamic Modeling
4. Experiment
5. Validation
6. Evaluation, Conclusion, and Suggestion for Future Development
