Candidates may complete the front cover of their answer book and sign their desk card but
must NOT write anything else until the start of the examination period is announced.
Dictionaries are not allowed with one exception. Those whose first language is not English
may use a standard translation dictionary to translate between that language and English
provided that neither language is the subject of this examination. Subject-specific translation
dictionaries are not permitted.
No electronic devices capable of storing and retrieving text, including electronic dictionaries,
may be used.
Candidates should not substantially repeat material from their assessed essays in attempting
answers.
1. Translate the following passage into fluent English. Please write your answer on alternate
lines. [30 marks]
Lucian compares an uneducated man who is proud of his book-collection to a man proud
of his prosthetic feet, and to Thersites.
καὶ ἐγένετό τις οὐ πρὸ πολλοῦ ἐν Ἀσίαι πλούσιος ἀνήρ, τοὺς πόδας ἀπολεσάμενος ἀπὸ
τοῦ σφόδρα ψυχροῦ ἐπειδή ποτε διὰ χιόνος βαδίζων ἔτυχεν. οὗτος τοίνυν τοῦτο μὲν
ἐλεεινὸν ἐπεπόνθει, θεραπεύων δὲ τὴν συμφορὰν ξυλίνους πόδας πεποίητο. ἐκεῖνο δὲ
γελοῖον ἐποίει· κρηπῖδας γὰρ καλλίστας ἐωνεῖτο ἀεὶ καὶ τὴν πλείστην πραγματείαν
περὶ ταύτας εἶχεν, ὡς κάλλιστα κεκοσμημένα εἴη αὐτῶι τὰ ξύλα. οὐ ταὐτὰ οὖν καὶ σὺ
ποιεῖς, χωλὴν μὲν ἔχων τὴν γνώμην, ὠνούμενος δὲ χρυσᾶς κρηπῖδας;
ἐπεὶ δὲ ἐν τοῖς ἄλλοις καὶ τὸν Ὅμηρον ἐπρίω πολλάκις, ἀναγνώτω σοί τις αὐτοῦ λαβὼν
τὴν δευτέραν τῆς Ἰλιάδος ῥαψωιδίαν· πεποίηται δέ τις συμβουλεύων παγγέλοιος
ἄνθρωπος, αἰσχρὸς τὸ σῶμα καὶ τυπτόμενος. ἐκεῖνος τοίνυν ὁ Θερσίτης ὁ τοιοῦτος εἰ
λάβοι τὰ Ἀχιλλέως ὅπλα, οἴει ὅτι διὰ τοῦτο καὶ καλὸς ἅμα καὶ ἰσχυρὸς ἂν γένοιτο, καὶ
νικήσει τὸν Ἕκτορα, μηδὲ φέρειν ἐπὶ τῶν ὤμων τὴν τοῦ Ἀχιλλέως μελίαν δυνάμενος;
b) How seriously should one take Lucian’s criticisms of the religious beliefs of his day?
c) To what extent are the texts you have studied in this module a valuable source for
social norms in the second century CE?
3. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions which follow:
a) Parse the following verb-forms; include the dictionary-entry and its meaning: [4

Example: πέπονθα (line 1) is 1st person singular perfect indicative active of πάσχω ‘I
suffer’.

b) Identify and explain the gender and case of the following pronouns: [3 marks each]
Example: οἷα (1) is neuter accusative – neuter because it refers to ‘things’ suffered,
accusative because it is the direct object of πέπονθα.
