2 Q83AG1-E1

1. Translate the following passage into fluent English. Please write your answer on alternate
lines. [30 marks]

Lucian compares an uneducated man who is proud of his book-collection to a man proud
of his prosthetic feet, and to Thersites.

ποιεῖς, χωλὴν μὲν ἔχων τὴν γνώμην, ὠνούμενος δὲ χρυσᾶς κρηπῖδας;
νικήσει τὸν Ἕκτορα, μηδὲ φέρειν ἐπὶ τῶν ὤμων τὴν τοῦ Ἀχιλλέως μελίαν δυνάμενος;

(Lucian, To the Uneducated Book-Collector 6-7, adapted)

ἐλεεινός: pitiable πραγματεία, -ας, ἡ: concern

3. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions which follow:

ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ: Τίς δὲ ἦν ὁ ταῦτα τολμήσας, ὦ Πολύφημε;
ἔπραξεν οὐδὲ πάνυ εὐθαρσὴς ὤν;
