What about Monsanto?

Monsanto is one of the most recognized and important corporations in the agrochemical and
biotechnological business. It existed since the beginning of the XX century until 2018, when
it finally joined Bayer in its crops science division. Among its most important works, there
are the glyphosate-based herbicides and genetically modified crops.

Nonetheless, its influence on the crop growing field and the food market, has triggered a lot
of critics, which go from allegations about the side effects on people’s health, as well as on
the economy of micro companies and farmers. Based on this, this essay pretends to highlight
the various aspects associated with this affair in Colombia, and express an opinion about their
benefits and secondary effects.

To begin with, it is relevant to mention Monsanto’s business has led not only to employment
increase but also to progress in Colombia. For instance, the country’s agricultural production
has experienced a significant increment, which has expanded the business and permitted
economic growth. In addition to that, the number of unemployed people has noticeably
reduced, thanks to the numerous employments Monsanto generated. Moreover, the benefits
have also been perceived in the growing of crops itself, since vegetables and fruits are now
safe from vermin, thanks to the herbicides and pesticides the company produces.

On the other hand, one cannot ignore those benefits have also brought harm to other fields of
industry, as well as to people´s health. Firstly, Monsanto’s influence in the crops and seeds
market has driven many small companies to bankruptcy, this, due to the unequal business
conditions. Secondly, their abusive usage of glyphosate in their herbicides has generated
polemic, seen that it may produce cancer and other illnesses. At last, it is necessary to mention
by using that type of merchandise, the soil is eroding and might not be able to grow more
food.

From my personal point of view, I would say Monsanto´s activity is the origin of all
problems. It is relevant to recognize the various benefits it has meant to the country
(Employment, food quality and vermin control). Nevertheless, the company must stop using
toxic chemicals that affect the environment and people's health. With more responsible
management, any shortcomings can be addressed, resolved and the economy can take greater
advantage of the company services.
