Introduction
On a cold January morning in 2009, a US Airways flight took off from New
York’s LaGuardia Airport. The routine flight boarded normally, the passengers
and crew having no idea of the drama getting ready to unfold. Just minutes
after take off however, the airbus hit a flock of geese, causing both engines to
shut down.

In the seconds that followed, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger had to

make a series of lightning fast decisions that would determine the fate of
everyone on board that aircraft. With skill, leadership, and wisdom, Captain
Sully successfully landed the airbus on the Hudson River. No lives were lost.

To be “Captain” means to be the chief, the head, the one in charge. When
that plane went down, Sully was in charge of handling the crisis and tasked
with the responsibility of saving the lives of those on board. Thinking about
Sully and the US Airways flight, we can easily understand when it comes to
salvation of any sort, you want a fully capable Captain!

Scripture tells us we have one.

In Hebrews 2:10, Jesus is called the Captain of our Salvation. He’s the author
and source, the one tasked with accomplishing our redemption and taking
care of business… and He has. Our Captain is fully capable, fully competent,
fully proven, and fully willing. He has successfully navigated our salvation and
will safely deliver us home. Praise the Lord!

This prayer journal is intended to deepen our understanding of the One we

call Savior and Lord. My prayer is that we would spend time pondering His
names and acquainting ourselves with His excellency, resulting in a deeper
passion and fervency for Him. May you encounter the living Christ as you
dive into praying His names.

How to Use This Journal
To help you get the most out of your 30-day prayer journey, you will find a
four-step process baked into the journal pages that follow. This is the same
process we use within all our Praying the Promises Prayer Journals and find
the simplicity is wonderfully effective at drawing treasures from a single
passage.

Read It: You’ll begin by looking up the passage for each day. Always begin
by reading through the verse several times. If you have the time, read the
scripture in several different versions to get a robust understanding of the
passage’s intent.

Write It: While this section is for writing the daily passage out, you can
also use it to articulate the day’s scripture in your own words. Oftentimes,
thinking through the passage and putting it in your own words facilitates a
deeper understanding of the verse.

Ponder It: In this section you’ll find a few questions to get you thinking
about the passage and how that particular name of Jesus applies to your life.
Meditation is powerful so don’t skip or shortchange this section.

Pray It: Here is where you will exercise your faith. Using the scripture and
insights gained while meditating, pray the passage back to God. You may
begin by re-stating the verse, acknowledging the specific things Christ is
and does, and asking God for faith to believe this is yours in Christ. Voice
your “amen” to God’s promise in accordance with II Corinthians 1:20 (see
more details on this here: www.arabahjoy.com/40-promises). Thank the Lord
for His gift and ask for a deeper understanding of the riches you have been
given. You will find that putting this all down on paper will force you to think
through and articulate truth in deeper ways… and, with surprising results.

Finally, I’d love to close with a passage. This scripture reminds me to keep my
focus on, and my pursuits in line with, that which is real and lasting. I hope it
encourages you to keep pressing into the One and Only as well.

“For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus
Christ.” (I Corinthians 3:11, NASB)

May this journal be a tool in laying the unshakeable foundation of Christ.
