Established in 1966, the Department of Applied Training Programme on

Mechanics is involved in teaching various struc-
tural engineering subjects to B. Tech. Civil Engi-
neering and B. Arch. Department offers two post-
graduate programs viz. M. Tech. in Structural
Engineering and M. Tech. in Structural Dynamics
& Earthquake Engineering. Since its inception,
the department has been actively involved in re-
search and consultancy work. In the last decade,
the department has pursued many earthquake en-
gineering related activities. The Structural Dy-
namics Lab is equipped with three small shake
tables while the Earthquake Engineering Lab is
having a servo-hydraulic shake table of 3m x 3m
for seismic ground motion simulation, which pro-
vides a unique facility for research and testing in
central India.
Course Faculty
Course lectures will be primarily engaged by Dr.
G. V. Rao, who is presently associated with ACS
Design Consulting Pvt. Ltd. Bengaluru. He has
over 35 years of experience on working with
structural engineering problems with emphasis
on dynamic response under random loading. He
has worked on wide range of problems, including
rotor Dynamics, Transmission Line Towers etc.
He has authored books in the field of Structural
Dynamics, Stochastic Mechanics, and Filtering
and optimisation.

Objective
All environmental loads, particularly the dynam-
ic loads such as earthquake, wind are invariably
random in nature. It is imperative to know the
effect of these inherent uncertainties on the be-
haviour of structures. Mathematical treatment of
uncertainties necessitates knowledge of probabil-
ity theory. In this context, the environmental
loads are generally called random processes. In
the five days' training programme on Random
Vibration, effect of these uncertainties on struc-
tural response is analysed. The course on Struc-
tural Dynamics presently being offered to PG /
UG students may be considered as a course with
an assumption of loads being deterministic. Ob-
viously, it is essential to further the knowledge
gained through this first level course by a study
of structural vibrations with uncertainties includ-
ed in the loads’ description. The five days train-
ing programme is introductory in nature and is
an attempt to focus on the essential aspects of
Random Vibrations. It also highlights its signifi-
cance from the viewpoint of industrial needs.

 Random Vibration, Environmental loads and
characterization, Uncertainties (randomness)

 Stochastic Processes, Time and Frequency
domain characteristics
 Response of SDOF, MDOF oscillators under
random excitation
 Response of structural systems under random
inputs
 Hands on experience using software tools:
NISA and MATLAB
 Special session on ‘Probability Theory for
Random Vibrations’
Course Fee and Registration
The course is sponsored by TEQIP-III and hence
there is no course fee for the participants from
educational institutes.
Practicing engineers and participants from indus-
tries shall pay a course fee of Rs. 3000/-. This fee
shall be paid through a demand draft drawn in
favour of ‘Director VNIT’, payable at Nagpur.

pants. Lunch and Tea will be provided during the

Limited accommodation is available at VNIT
