It has been argued that essay questions are better than
multiple-choice questions in assessing students’
performance.
Do you agree? Discuss

Note:
The task is framed in such a manner that it will allow for free
expression of opinions. It will also stimulate discussion, provoke
argument and foster intellectual discourse among students and
between students and e-tutors.

Questions
A N E X A M P L E

Sample Task
M C Q F O R M AT ( M C Q T E S T )
Questions
A N E X A M P L E Students go to school to learn, not to take tests. Moreover, tests
cannot be used to indicate a student’s absolute learning. What all
tests can do is to rank learners in order of achievement and this
relative ranking is influenced by guessing, bluffing and the
subjective opinions of the teacher who is marking the answer
scripts. The teaching and learning process would be beneficial if
we do away tests and depend on students’ self evaluation .

Which of the following types of test is this teacher primarily

talking about?

A. Diagnostic test B. Formative test C. Summative test

Note: Questions in MCQ tests comprise more complex items focusing on a

wider topical coverage.

assessment.

Short-answer Essay Question (SEQ) is a type of
essay question that restricts or limit both the
content of students’ answers and the form of their
written responses
