Knife Vice

Hello Guys and Girls

Tutorial on my knife vice:

The reason I made it

I didn’t own any type of vice and was clamping everything to my boat trailer. All the material
used was scrap, the total cost was $25.00 for the plastic round stock, springs and metal inserts
with bolts. I’m very happy with the final results, considering using a limited amount of tools. I
have some pictures of the build but I didn’t take photos at each stage.

Tools list
1. Grinder
2. Cut off wheels and grinding disc
3. Tape measure and rule
4. Drill press
5. Files flat and half round
6. Tap and Die set
7. Welder. Mig, Tig or Arc
8. Mill (optional)
9. Lathe (optional)

Cutting material

The next step was to cut the section pipe (seamless pipe preferred) to the required lengths then
mark the center line of each pipe then center punch and drill and tap

The plate mark out as shown in the drawing in the appendix’s the knife vice stem. I didn’t have
a mill or anything to make a curved slot that would have been my preferred method so I went
drawing one.

This where I realized the my drill press had movement so I had to remake nearly all the parts
again but I didn’t get photos of this so just using the original pictures I have but you can get the
Idea will need to refurbish my drill press

The base plate

The base can be whatever you want to be depending on where you want it to be mounted this
what I used 100mm x 180mm x 6 mm plate you need to layout and drill the holes in from the
corners approx.: 20mm

Welding
Knife Vice
Base and the pipe70mm x 80mm x 3.85mm so it can rotate don’t know if it required or
not but I have that option. But it can be left out if you don’t want it and just weld the
90mm x 100mm x 6.0mm round pipe

Welding the 90mm x 100mm x 6.0mm round pipe and 100mm square x 3mm flat plate
to make the Circle for the top all I did was trace around the pipe then cut out and using
the grinder and a then shaped it on the belt sander to get round and under size so I
could weld it with decent penetration then clean up after

Next weld the outer base and the stem together making sure that the area is clean so the weld
can get nice weld bead.
Knife Vice

The top knife stem as in Drawing 1 and 2 to the outer 90mm x 120mm x 5.36mm Round
pipe outer again make sure the area is clean for decent weld unlike me I was in rushed and
skip it the weld was crap looking

Now with all the Welding done next is to reduce the HYPE round stock ( wood if preferred)
to fit the insert tubing this where I had trouble not owning a lathe but a friend of my wife
her husband had access to one after fitting then cut along the length of the stock then Drill
and glue in the metal inserts in the attach m8 bolts with springs I don’t have pictures of this
stage. Now it’s just a matter of painting then assembling all the components the M6 spring
loaded bolts are for the knife vice stem.
