FIELD COLLECTION OF A SOIL SAMPLE
THEORY
Moisture content = Mass of water x 100%
Mass of dry soil
w = (mw/ ms) x 100%
SPECIMEN CALCULATION
Considering 0.2m depth readings from Moisture Content Variation and Soil Profile table from
observation sheet,
Container No 5
Weight of container = 41.58 g
Weight of container + wet soil = 97.70 g
Weight of container + dry soil = 88.65 g
Weight of moisture = 97.70 – 88.65
= 9.05 g
Weight of dry soil = 88.65 – 41.58
= 47.07 g

Moisture content = (9.05 / 47.07) x 100%

= 19.23 %

Container No 6
Weight of container = 41.00 g
Weight of container + wet soil = 82.96 g
Weight of container + dry soil = 76.53 g
Weight of moisture = 82.96 – 76.53
= 6.43 g

Weight of dry soil = 76.53 – 41.00

= 35.53 g

Moisture content = (6.43 / 35.53) x 100%

= 18.10 %

Average moisture content at 0.2 m depth = (19.23 + 18.10) / 2

= 18.67 %

INSITU DENSITY TEST – SAND REPLACEMENT
METHOD
DATA
Bulk density of sand (γ) = 1.446 g/cm3
Volume of conical part = 11.9941 x 10-4
THEORY
Bulk density = Mass of total soil sample
Volume of the hole
ρWet = M/V
ρWet = (ms+mw)/ V
= (1+mw/ ms) ms / V
= (1+w) ρdry
ρdry = ρWet / (1+w)
CALCULATION
Weight of sand replaced = Initial mass – Final mass
= 7720.0 – 4919.0
= 2801.0 g

Bulk density of sand = 1.446 g/cm3

Volume of sand replaced = Mass of sand replaced
Bulk density of sand
= 2801.0 / 1.446
= 1937.07 cm3
= 19.3707 x 10-4 m3

Volume of conical part = 11.9941 x 10-4 m3

Volume of the hole = (19.3707 – 11.9941) x 10-4
= 7.3766 x 10-4 m3

Mass of soil excavated = (Wt. of cont+wet soil) – Wt. of cont.

= (1448.59 – 284.45) g
= 1.164 kg

From theory,
Bulk density of the soil = 1.164 / (7.3766x10-4)
= 1577.96 kg/m3

Moisture content of the sample = Moisture content at 0.0 m depth of Table 1

= 9.45%

Dry density of the soil sample = 1577.96/(1+0.0945)

= 1441.72 kg/m3
