INTRODUCTION
We all do it, - names, places and events!
forget things
Some of us jokingly putdown to old age and
it

although it is frustrating we give in to what we think are

the inevitable effects of time. However, it is never too
late to boost your mental faculties, improve and even

reverse this supposed decline.

A good deal of research has been undertaken in
order to understand the effects that ageing has on brain
function. The old theory, that we lose vast numbers of
brain cells as we grow older, has now been overturned.
In fact we continue to produce new brain cells well into
our seventies and it is now recognised that the normal
ageing process leaves most mental functions intact.
It is true, though, that from the age of thirty onwards

the brain does begin to change. This is thought to be due

to the effect of damaging oxidants upon the genetic
composition of the brain. It is this that leads eventually
to the forgetful symptoms that we know and love.
Researchers now believe that whilst some memory
loss due to ageing is inevitable, the pace of decline is

not pre-determined. The general consensus amongst

scientists appears to be that mental exercise, when
combined with physical exercise and diet, can indeed
improve mental performance. Like the heart, it turns
out that the brain can be protected from harm.
So how can you get mental exercise? Well, one very
easy way is by doing simple puzzles. Brain teasers,
crosswords and Sudokus can all help keep your brain
limber and youthful. Recendy, Ian Robertson of the
2 BRAIN GAME

Institute of Neuroscience at Trinity College, Dublin,

carried out a study involving 3,000 men and women
aged 65 to 94. They were given 10 hours of training in
memory, problem-solving, and decision-making tasks
over the course of several weeks and began to display
marked and lasting increases in cognitive ability.
"Booster" training sessions received a year later result-

ed in further improvements in mental function which

persisted for over a year. The gained mental ability was

equivalent to that which is typically lost by older people

over a 7-14 year period.
Professor Robertson concluded that by keeping the
brain agile with regular word and number puzzles such
as Sudoku, the brain can be 'made' up to 14 years
younger.
The puzzles in Daily Mail Brain Game are designed
to challenge your brain and test and improve your
brain age. Just work through the puzzles, calculate your
score and you will discover your brain age, which may
be quite different from your actual age! A lower brain
age indicates a better-functioning brain. However, if

your brain age is much older than your actual age, don't
worry - by completing the puzzles, you are exercising
your brain and you should see an improvement in your
overall scores as you complete more puzzles. Above all,
having fun is a good way to keep your brain youthful,
and that's the main idea behind the Brain Games.

Good luck!
