Types of Plate Boundaries

CONVERGENT BOUNDARY - a boundary in which two plates move toward each other
Types:
1. Converging Oceanic and Continental Plates
Geologic Event/Feature Present:
Subduction – a geological process that takes place at convergent boundaries of
tectonic plates where one plate moves under another and is forced or sinks due to gravity into
the mantle.
Trench is formed at the subduction zones.
Volcanic Arc (Terrestrial Volcanoes) is formed on top of the continental plate.
Earthquake
2. Converging of Two Oceanic Plates
Geologic Event/Feature Present:
Subduction – a geological process that takes place at convergent boundaries of
tectonic plates where one plate moves under another and is forced or sinks due to gravity into
the mantle.
Trench is formed at the subduction zones.
Submarine volcanoes are formed in the less dense oceanic plate
Volcanic Island Arc (Islands) is formed on the surface of the ocean
Massive underwater earthquakes which in turn can cause TSUNAMIS.
3. Converging of Two Continental Plates
Geologic Event/Feature Present:
Collision Zone is formed at the point where the 2 continental plates converge. There is
NO SUBDUCTION.
Mountain Range/s is formed on the surface of the continental plate
Earthquakes
