Maf tuning

After you have completed lt and st trim tuning with the Ve table in speed density and all
trims are within 5% it’s now time to re-enable the maf and tweak it. This process will
take a lot less time than trim tuning in SD.

1. Edit-engine diagnostics-general tab-maf fail frequency-set to 13500

a. write tune to pcm
2. Start engine-open scanner
3. Insert maf Hz into PID
4. tools-vcm control-fuel & Spark tab-Reset fuel trims
a. this is done so that the trims learned in SD do not mess with trims from the
maf+ve table
5. Drive around under normal conditions, getting a good average of cells normally
seen during driving through out the day. No need to try and reach far out fuel trim
cells.
6. When logging is done open the chart display, with the histogram and the PID so
you can see maf Hz, ltft and the chart.
7. Use the cursor to scan over the chart you will notice the blue cursor in the
histogram will jump around and values in the PID will change. Wherever the fuel
trim value is not 0 note the maf Hz value, it wont be just one value sometimes you
will see as much as a 2000 range of Hz in one cell. Try and narrow the range for
that single cell down by scanning back and forth with the cursor on the chart.
8. edit-engine-airflow-maf calibration
a. Adjust the range of Hz that you noted earlier as a percentage. For
example if the ftc value is –11 multiply that range of maf hz in that ftc by .
89
b. If the trim was positive 9 multiply by 1.09 etc…..
9. After you have adjusted the spectrum of maf Hz, make sure to reset fuel trims
before driving and logging again. It is very hard to get a lot of data above 10000
Hz some will never see that value much less higher. Whenever I get a max value
Hz and the ftc is off I adjust that cell along with everything above it. Normally I
just have to repeat this process once and the trims fall into line. The maf graph
should look like a nice smooth upward sloping curve, some tiny lumps are fine
but nothing like the Rocky Mountains.

Drive around-set the LTFT in the computer and never hit the reset trim button again.

Many people have luck with just tuning trims with this table and not messing with the
VE. At drastic variations down low and up top the VE comes into play that’s why it’s a
good idea to tune both. Also some argue that the maf shouldn’t need recalibrating
regardless of engine mods, if this were the case then trim values would be within 5%
error, with stock maf values, which they are not even on stock engines!
