Problem statement
Lack of energy access is one of the major problems facing the people of
Masambanjati. Provision of modern forms of energy can improve the quality
of life, bring income generation activities, improve social services (education,
health, water), as well as improve agricultural productivity.
Women and girls in Masambanjati are disproportionately burdened by this
lack of energy access. They spend between 2 – 3 hours collecting firewood;
walk an average of 3- 5 km. In addition, they are raped, exposed to snake
bites, etc
Cooking with traditional forms of energy in inefficient stoves is associated
with acute respiratory infections, and contributes to environmental
degradation through deforestation, desertification.
Dispersed nature of the population, low load factors, and high cost of
transmission and distribution makes it uneconomical for the national grid to
be extended to rural areas. The future looks bleak and these people will
remain in darkness in the forseable future.
Solution Statement
This action intends to provide cleaner, affordable and reliable forms of
modern energy services to the communities. The action will generate and
distribute electric power. It will create energy kiosks.
