Why study Fluid mechanics???
What is a Fluid??

 Is it water??
 Is it any liquid??
 Is air a fluid??
 In physics, a fluid is a substance that continually deforms
(flows) under an applied shear stress.Fluids are a subset
of the phases of matter and include liquids, gases,
plasmas and, to some extent, plastic solids.
Lets Talk about a fluid’s properties

 Density of a fluid
Properties of a fluid

 Viscosity

 The resistance of a fluid towards

flowing.

 Variation of viscosity with

temperature?
 What will happen if we heat honey?
Properties of fluid

 Surface Tension

 Floating coin experiment

 Formation of a water droplet

Surface tension
Atmospheric Pressure??

 Inverted glass experiment

 The atmospheric pressure counteracts the

weight of the fluid inside the glass.
Pascal’s Law

 The working of a hydraulic jack??

Atmospheric Pressure

 Crushed Can experiment

 The variation in temperature reduces the
pressure inside the can
 Atmospheric pressure from outside exerts
greater force and the can is crushed
Hydrostatic Forces on Surface

 While designing an underwater building,

the hydrostatic forces need to be
studied.
Hydrostatic pressure

 Why deep sea divers need specialized

diving suits??

 The picture shows a specialized diving

suit (Exosuit) which helps divers to go
beyond 1000ft deep in oceans.

Buoyancy

 Why a huge ship floats on water

but a small metal coin sinks??

 The answer is buoyancy

Why does a ship sink???
Kinematics and Dynamics of Flow
Bernoulli’s Theorem

 Why do GI sheet roofs fly off

during a cyclone????
Drag

Wind Tunnel Test

Lift

 Why does a speeding boat flips off??

Terminal Velocity

 Can a skydiver falling through sky attain

unlimited speed?
Questions??

 Throughout the course , we will be discussing

the mathematical and scientific aspects of all
the different phenomenon we just discussed.
