Assignment guidelines
Examine and appraise evidence supporting a clinical topic Discuss processes for translating
this evidence into clinical practice. In doing so, demonstrate an awareness of factors that
may inhibit the implementation of evinced into practice.

General
 Choose a clinical topic, and consider evidence base relating, to children and young
people’s nursing
 You will need to undertake a thorough and appropriate literature search and conduct a
review of the evidence.
 You will be expected to focus on at least five of the highest sources of current evidence
from this literature search.

Clear introduction
 Provide a clear statement of intent and signpost the essay.
 Tell the reader what will be included in this essay and the order.
 Define and critically consider the importance of evidence based practice relating this to the
necessity for undertaking a review of the literature.
 Clarify the rationale for the choice of topic and its importance to children’s nursing,
including the precise question your assignment will be based upon.

Main body
 Provide a brief discussion of how the literature was obtained, demonstrating that you have
undertaken a thorough and logical search of the literature by;
 Briefly describing your search strategy using a PICO or PEO grid including key
words, index terms, and any limits/methodological filters.
 Providing a criteria of inclusion and exclusion of studies
 Providing a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses
PRISMA) flow diagram detailing included and excluded studies
 Include an overview of the types of sources obtained including methodology with
consideration of the hierarchy of evidence. The reasons for excluding potentially relevant
sources should be indicated). A summary table of the study details should be included in the
appendix using the provided tool.
 An appraisal of the studies should include consideration of the study designs, sample, data
analysis and any other important methodological issues.
 A synopsis of the research findings should be included
 Present recommendations for practice that are derived from research findings
 Discuss implementation of the findings into practice with consideration of a model or
framework for implementing evidence based practice. This should include exploring barriers
and facilitators to implementing this evidence.

Conclusion
Conclude your essay by summarising what you have discussed throughout this essay in a
logical order. Do not just repeat your introduction. Start this by giving an overall summary;
what have you done, what have you shown, how is this relevant to current practice.

Throughout, you need to demonstrate

 Claims and opinions are supported by appropriate references
 Inclusion of a summary table of the study details in the appendix.
 Within the word limit (3000 words +/- 10%).
 Correct grammar and spelling.
 Correct referencing according to LSBU Harvard referencing system.

Word count
A word count includes everything in the main body of the text (including headings, in-text
citations, quotes, tables, lists, etc.). List of references, appendices or footnotes are NOT
included in the word count. Any work after the maximum word limit of 3300 (word count +
10%) has been reached will not be marked.

Submission File Format- Microsoft Word document (saved in MS word or rich text format) or
pdf file only.Please note that only one electronic file can be submitted so all appendices,
reference lists, front page etc must be merged into a single electronic file.
