SOUNDS

It consist of longitudinal waves (travels parallel to the motion of particles or pushing and pulling the
material thus creating compression and rarefaction) that travels through liquid, solid and gas. It reaches
the fastest speed in a solid substance/material. The warmer the material, the faster the sound can
travel. Sound is heard more clearly during night than daytime since bending of sound waves occurred.
This is called, refraction. The sound during day will bend upward while during night it will bend down
ward.

Characteristics of Sound Waves:

1.) Frequency- the number of wave per second

2.) Amplitude-the height of wave
3.) Wavelength-the distance of wave
4.) Period-the reciprocal of its frequency
5.) Wave speed-describes how fast the sound is moving

 Sonic Boom- it is a loud and explosive sound happens when an object (ex: an aircraft) is moving
faster than the speed of sound. The aircraft is said to be supersonic.
 Echo – is just a reflected sounds
 Reverberation- multiple reflection or echoes in a certain place.
 Echo sounding- is use by the scientist to map the sea floor and to determine the depth of the
ocean or sea. It is another application of sound reflection.
