CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In ancient times, Egyptians use berries, lead ore and copper in producing

cosmetic products. The history of make-up truly changes over time. There were

times when makeup becomes dangerous, but people are lucky enough to live

today and not in the past. The very first women wear make-up were the ancient

Egyptians dating back to at least 7000 years ago. During the Victorian Era,

makeup cosmetics were embraced and developed better by the Europeans. The

development they made includes eye shadow that can be dated back to 12000

years ago from ancient Egypt. Eye shadow and lipstick were the oldest types of

makeup products.

Make-up has been used for a very long period of period, which spans from

7,000 years ago up until now. Cosmetic body art envolved into face make-up.

Since rituals need cosmetic body art, early human culture thinks something out of

it and decided to apply it on their faces and that is when face make-up started.

Artifacts from Egypt and Greece have been found by archaeologists, which dates

back around ancient times. That evidence means make-up has been around for

a long period. There is a book that proves the existence of make-up a very long

time ago. The old testament - 2 Kings 9:30 where Jezebel painted her eyelids -

approximately 840 BC and another one is from the book of Esther that mentioned

other beauty treatments. Ancient Rome used make-up too, although it was

disapproved of by Roman works of literature. Women from that era were said to

be the inventors of make-up.

It said that women in Egypt have their version of eyeshadow wherein it is

made up of a crushed concoction of copper lead and a vivid green mineral called

malachite. The country of China became the most notable eras for make-up. It is

said that they applied the “foundation” for them to distinguish themselves as

working class. They also mastered the art of lipstick. It is said that Greek women

have the idea of “all-natural” make-up looks for women. But it leads to the use of

poisonous ingredients to cover up discoloration. It is also said that women, can

wear any kind of make-up because make-up history has given us an idea or

influenced us. It stated that during 1158 C.E. women used a substance called

“ceruse” wherein it is made up of vinegar and poison that may lead to skin

damage and sometimes it may lead to death.

Using make-up often will have a higher risk of skin disease by using

make-up every day. At a young age of using make-up, women have the highest

risk of having acne. Make-up will give you a risk of eye infection or more

problems on the face. Using make-up can affect the development of the

hormones or can damage it. The chemical in the make-up will affect the skin of

the user because of that they will have skin infection because of the chemical in

it.

Some girls are scared to show their bare image because of what other

people tell them in social media, that’s why they always use make-up. Women

use make-up to hide their true selves. There’s a lot of things to do while applying

make-up and if they are not satisfied with their look, they will not stop yet and that

is wasting a lot of time. They wear make-up because they always think about

what people say and to hide their true colors. Some girls can express themselves

more and remove fear while having a face to face talk with other people when

wearing make-up. Simply because wearing make-up can give them self-

confidence.

The reason why women wear make-up is to lessen their anxiousness to

not get judged by their natural appearance in society. While women who want

attention and appear better in the eyes of society wear make-up because they

feel comfortable when wearing make-up and they also feel more seductive. At a

very young, girls are taught that wearing make-up can lead them to success in

everything in life. It includes dating, job interviews and getting pretty friends. Two

universal characteristics make women attractive that can be accentuated. It is the

color tone around the eyes to look glowing and on the lips to look healthier. And

another factor is the face shape and fairness. To achieve a good impression,

people shouldn’t cover their faces with makeup but simply enhance their natural

beauty.

They use make-up for them to express themselves and also to boost their

self-esteem. Based on the studies wearing make-up doesn’t define your self

beauty but others said that natural beauty is the best kind of beauty. But

according to others, they describe “make-up” as an art. They wear make-up to

feel more comfortable in their skin.

Through the use of make-up, it helps women to think well and enhance

their decision making. It is said that wearing make-up can help them to boost

their self-confidence as well as self beauty, as a result it can give you a

presentable look. By the use of make-up, it builds up self-confidence towards the

people you interact with. Also by wearing make-up, it enhances your self-

confidence that you could get an acknowledgment while you interact with one

another.

This descriptive study is conducted to understand the culture of make-up

and to know if wearing make-up is effective in boosting the self-confidence of an

individual. Another reason is to learn more and explore this topic. Also to know

why women wear make-up as a form of expression on their own opinion and

perspective in beauty. One more thing is to figure out if the usage of make-up is

truly affecting one’s self-esteem and to know the views of other people towards

those who wear make-up daily because of certain reasons like going to work, to

school or just hanging out with some friends.
