1. Sr. faculty members of CE department made all out efforts to arrange for internship of all
students who secured more than 6.0 SGPA in the 3rd Semester examination. The students
got chance for internship with some top companies in India like MECON India Ltd, Ranchi.
Tantia Construction Limited, McNally Bharat Limited and Texmaco Bridge and Infrastructure
Limited. Normally, these well-known companies do not allow students, to do their
internship in 2nd year, and allow only 3rd year students. Constant follow up and interaction
with companies, by the department's senior faculty members made it possible to make this
impossible feat possible. The same effort will be done for current second year students.
Third year students will also be sent to different companies
2. Civil Engineering department has the facility of teaching 'Total Station surveying' as the
sophisticated instrument was procured for the survey laboratory. This will help the students
to get hands on training at the University and make them ready for the Civil engineering

partnership cells are very established in leading institutes of the country). This partnership
cell will encourage students to do experiments with industry and also help faculty members
to earn revenue for the University.
3. Civil Engineering department started a house journal UEM Civil Times and the first issue
was launched in the month of August 2017, which coincides with the start of 3 rd and 5th
Semester courses as this magazine is targeted towards the present 2 nd and 3rd year CE
students. The contents have been selected and crafted keeping in mind the modern trends
in civil engineering like say 3D printed structures, Green buildings, castellated beams, tuned
mass dampers and a host of information and practical matters that the students may come
across whilefacing the interview boards. A student’s corner has been dedicated for students
to contribute subjects like Technical Fest etc. A safety corner and editors choice also
provides a lot to learn on safety and engineering aspects at site. Case histories are also
provided in this eight page profusely illustrated document.
4. CE department has started a few classes (whenever there is a gap between classes)
wherein new concepts in CE are taught with help of multimedia presentation. The students
coined the name “OFF BIT” to these classes. Interested 2nd and 3rd year students voluntarily
join these classes as they get brilliant ideas for Techno Fest projects in which they
participate or are likely to participate in future. These classes where construction videos are
shown are popular amongst the students.
5. Board of studies meeting for Civil Engineering 3rd and 5th semester course contents was
held on 23rd June 2017 at the University premises. A few changes were suggested by the
expert committee comprising of two professors from academia and one expert from the
Industry. Their recommendations were implemented and the Steel reinforcement bars as
well as construction material for steel buildings have been introduced recently.
7. Mentor-Mentee which was in the anvil and has just been initiated after the joining of the
new faculty members.
8. The touch and feel aspect of engineering education has been initiated with the help of
very small miniscule projects which will imbibe the sense of feeling that an engineer should
have for starting some bigger projects. Touch and feel projects is being spearheaded by the
HOD and faculty members will guide students of 2nd and 3rd year of CE department.
9. A good number of useful reference books and National Code of India by BIS (Bureau of
Indian Standards) has been added to the library. International and Indian civil Engineering

The scope of this department is to bridge the gap between subjects taught and industry
requirements and prepare the students to undertake opportunities and challenges in their
stream with utmost confidence and succeed. The department aims to widen the horizons of
achievement and enable students with life-skills imbibing the backbone of ethics and social
consciousness to achieve new heights in their career.
UEM has a strong focus on student achievement and progress. We want every student to
have the best life chances possible and know that this starts with a great set of
qualifications. We were delighted to achieve a good percentage of progress i.e. almost all
students achieved grade higher than their targets in all subjects. Our teachers regularly
assess how to engage each student in their studies. They work hard to accurately monitor
the progress of each and every student.
UEM believes in not only focusing on the grades but giving the students to experiment and
experience. Class on self-development and seminars/projects gave them a chance to
become smarter and explore the areas that they are passionate about.
All the faculties of the department went for a highly focused and enriched learning
programme at NITTTR, Kolkata
STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT
The department has arranged several internship opportunities for the students in the new-
age competitive companies of various specializations. Few of such organizations are:
1. Pantaloons

communication skills with the help of technology, respectively.
Achievements
Academic/ Curricular
The Department is primarily entrusted with the responsibility of the welfare of the
First Year B.Tech students and it does it with utmost sincerity and dedication.
The BSH department is also proud of its faculty members who are extensively
involved in research activities; 2 of them having already completed their PhDs and the
rest either pursuing it or involved in working on different research areas of interest.
The faculty members also have several research papers and publications to their
credit.
During the inter-semester break of 2017, the department, along with the placement
team ,had undertaken a month long pre-placement training session for the final year
BBA, BCA and MCA students so as enhance their numerical and soft skill abilies
before the beginning of the campus recruitment drive. The same has been undertaken
for the B.Tech students from January, 2018.
Besides academics the Department is also actively involved in the development of the
students’ personality, communication and soft skills so as to make them professionally
competent in the modern and globally competitive environment. The different co-curricular
activities organised by VOICES – English Club and THEATRIX – Drama Club, under the
supervision of the faculty coordinators of these clubs, aim at bringing about a holistic
development in the students.
The classes on Essential Studies for Professionals (ESP) and Skill Development Programme
for Professionals (SDP) started on 22nd August 2016 as optional papers, later it became an
elective paper for all students from the month of January 2017, These classes are divided
into theory and sessional papers, In theory classes students learn General Studies papers
having two credit points in their curriculum which help them improve their GK for the
competitive exams where SDP classes are based on hands on assignments -- students learn
various tricks to solve mathematical and logical problems in a very short time along with
special emphasis on Verbal Aptitude & communication skill. The syllabus of the entire
project is designed to make our students ready for all types of competitive exams.
The concept of Pulse Check Score card (Industrial Readiness Indicator) has been
implemented. Generally Competitive exams & Placement programs have three rounds like
Aptitude test, Technical interview followed by an HR interview. It has started to give these
flavour of competitive world to the students since last semester. They have to go through all
these rounds to obtain a good score in Pulse Check Score card. In this way the students can
come to know about their employability skill from industrial perspective. The students who
usually score poor marks will get special attention for their improvement.
There is a possibility of a mandatory exit test for the Engineering students in near future to
validate their degree as well as their employability. It has started providing the classes for
advance subject knowledge which will be very helpful to crack this mandatory exit test, if
any. It will be very beneficial for Technical interview in the Placement programme & GATE
exam too.
A bench of experienced trainers have been formed from different regions of India to
conduct the classes and grooming session. At present the pattern of competitive exams is
changing day by day, so we keep changing the syllabus to cater to the need of the industry.
In the final year of graduation the students will appear for various exams to get suitable
employment. The main focus is to place them in Public Sector and ensure a secured career.
Students of second & third year have already started appearing for various competitive
examinations from this year.
Essential Studies for Professionals is a training programme which gives advanced knowledge
to the students along with their regular curriculum, it trains our students for different exams
like GATE, CAT, GRE, WBCS, UPSC Civil Services, Bank PO, SSC(CGL) etc. The classes also
serve the purpose of helping students for their placement in private sector.
The Govt. of India has launched a few prestigious schemes (Prime Minister’s Digital India
programme) under National Mission on Education through ICT on 9 th and 10th July, 2017 at
Vigayan Bhavan, New Delhi.
The implementation of the above said schemes at University of Engineering & Management,
Kolkata are:
can be used by the authorised person to create more users based on the needs.
The first batch of our University has passed out this year and we want our students
to access their certificates online and the same can also be used for verification
purpose for their jobs and higher studies in national and foreign universities.
5. NDL (National Digital Library):The faculty members of our university have lifetime
membership of NDL and we use the content available for the engineering subjects.
6. Spoken Tutorials: The spoken tutorials are available online and the faculty
members use animated power point slides for classroom teaching which may come
with sound in case any phenomenon or process is being demonstrated.
7. Virtual Labs:The objectives of the virtual labs are to provide remote-access to Labs
in various disciplines of Science and Engineering which are otherwise available to
limited number of users due to constraints on time and geographical distances.
These Virtual Labs would cater to students at the undergraduate level, post
graduate level as well as to research scholars and enthuse students to conduct
experiments by arousing their curiosity. This would help them in learning basic and
advanced concepts through remote experimentation where the students can avail
the various tools for learning, including additional web-resources, video-lectures,
animated demonstrations and self-evaluation. Prof. Alok Kanti Deb with his
subordinate, Mr. Soumen Mallick from the Department of Information and
Technology of IIT Kharagpur came here to educate us about the concept of Virtual
Labs and accessed Labs on Department of Computer Science and Engineering of IIT
Kharagpur virtually through the online portal on 5th October, 2016 from our
Computer lab of Block 1 (B1). The lab was conducted in two halves and the number
of students present was 81 and 79 in the first and second half respectively. This
year in the month of September, Prof. Deb will conduct another workshop on
Virtual labs so that we can access the portal and implement the use of Virtual Labs
for all the subjects of various disciplines. Prof. Debkumar Chowdhury is the nodal
coordinator of UEM, Kolkata.
Antenna has been procured, set-up and installed for GSAT-15 satellite at the University
