VALUE ADDED COURSES

ESP & SDP

The classes on Essential Studies for Professionals (ESP) and Skill Development Programme
for Professionals (SDP) started on 22nd August 2016 as optional papers, later it became an
elective paper for all students from the month of January 2017, These classes are divided
into theory and sessional papers, In theory classes students learn General Studies papers
having two credit points in their curriculum which help them improve their GK for the
competitive exams where SDP classes are based on hands on assignments -- students learn
various tricks to solve mathematical and logical problems in a very short time along with
special emphasis on Verbal Aptitude & communication skill. The syllabus of the entire
project is designed to make our students ready for all types of competitive exams.
The concept of Pulse Check Score card (Industrial Readiness Indicator) has been
implemented. Generally Competitive exams & Placement programs have three rounds like
Aptitude test, Technical interview followed by an HR interview. It has started to give these
flavour of competitive world to the students since last semester. They have to go through all
these rounds to obtain a good score in Pulse Check Score card. In this way the students can
come to know about their employability skill from industrial perspective. The students who
usually score poor marks will get special attention for their improvement.
There is a possibility of a mandatory exit test for the Engineering students in near future to
validate their degree as well as their employability. It has started providing the classes for
advance subject knowledge which will be very helpful to crack this mandatory exit test, if
any. It will be very beneficial for Technical interview in the Placement programme & GATE
exam too.
A bench of experienced trainers have been formed from different regions of India to
conduct the classes and grooming session. At present the pattern of competitive exams is
changing day by day, so we keep changing the syllabus to cater to the need of the industry.
In the final year of graduation the students will appear for various exams to get suitable
employment. The main focus is to place them in Public Sector and ensure a secured career.
Students of second & third year have already started appearing for various competitive
examinations from this year.
Essential Studies for Professionals is a training programme which gives advanced knowledge
to the students along with their regular curriculum, it trains our students for different exams
like GATE, CAT, GRE, WBCS, UPSC Civil Services, Bank PO, SSC(CGL) etc. The classes also
serve the purpose of helping students for their placement in private sector.

SWAYAM & NPTEL

The Govt. of India has launched a few prestigious schemes (Prime Minister’s Digital India
programme) under National Mission on Education through ICT on 9 th and 10th July, 2017 at
Vigayan Bhavan, New Delhi.

The implementation of the above said schemes at University of Engineering & Management,
Kolkata are:

1. SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds): We as a

University have introduced the culture of perusal of online courses by the students
in each semester, where students get registered themselves to the courses online
and appear for a certification exam on the course. For the last two semesters we
are the National Champions for the performance of our students in NPTEL courses.
In the current semester, the students of our University have registered for an eight
week course named Technical English for Engineers from NPTEL. NPTEL (National
Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) is a joint initiative of 7 IITs and IISc
Bangalore through which our students can study online courses and get
certification in various topics. Also, the students have been motivated to take up
courses on their departmental subjects of their choice. Ministry of HRD is insisting
all Universities to implement giving 20% credit to exams taken from NPTEL /
SWAYAM.

2. SWAYAM PRABHA (Telecasting of High Quality Educational Programmes on 24x7

basis using GSAT -15 satellite):High Quality Educational Programmes are being
downloaded or streamed online to impart quality education above classroom
teaching which have great impact on our students. However, procurement, set-up
and installation of antenna for GSAT – 15 satellites will be done shortly to fulfill the
objective of this scheme. GSAT-15, India’s latest Communication Satellite is a high
power satellite being inducted to augment the capacity of transponders to provide
more bandwidth for Direct-to-Home television and VSAT services.

3. NAD (National Academic Depository):NAD is an initiative of MHRD under “Digital

India” program to provide Academic Certificates in digital format to students which
are available for 24/7 online access to the students. The certificates are digital and
verifiable and hence are easily trusted by all users. NAD is a significantly beneficial
initiative for students. We are planning to sign an agreement with the Depository.
This agreement is a standard agreement and is reviewed and approved by MHRD.
The Depository will thereafter give the authorised person login and password. This

can be used by the authorised person to create more users based on the needs.
The first batch of our University has passed out this year and we want our students
to access their certificates online and the same can also be used for verification
purpose for their jobs and higher studies in national and foreign universities.

4. E-PATHSHALA:It is a source of study material which can be accessed from the

website www.epathshala.nic.inhowever the study material available is only for
school level (class I - XII) and can be used to clarify the doubts of school level. The
study material required for engineering courses is not available in this source.

5. NDL (National Digital Library):The faculty members of our university have lifetime
membership of NDL and we use the content available for the engineering subjects.

6. Spoken Tutorials: The spoken tutorials are available online and the faculty

limited number of users due to constraints on time and geographical distances.
These Virtual Labs would cater to students at the undergraduate level, post
graduate level as well as to research scholars and enthuse students to conduct
experiments by arousing their curiosity. This would help them in learning basic and
advanced concepts through remote experimentation where the students can avail
the various tools for learning, including additional web-resources, video-lectures,
animated demonstrations and self-evaluation. Prof. Alok Kanti Deb with his
subordinate, Mr. Soumen Mallick from the Department of Information and
Technology of IIT Kharagpur came here to educate us about the concept of Virtual
Labs and accessed Labs on Department of Computer Science and Engineering of IIT
Kharagpur virtually through the online portal on 5th October, 2016 from our
