Subject: Proposal for improving academic performance of Weak students

There should be an emphasis on improvement of academic performance of weak students


from first year onwards. It is therefore essential to identify weak students, at first.

Identification of weak student:

The students who are securing 40 to 50 percent depending on first year subjects and
branches, grades in 40 to 50 percent of subjects or year back students will be considered as
weak students. If timely steps times are taken right at the beginning then worst performance
of such students can be avoided to a large extent.

The mentor is in a better position to identify a weak student; therefore, the mentor should
identify the weak student on the basis of class attendance, class performance, ability of the
student, and performance class test.

As per the survey, the weak student not only lag behind in academics but in the area social,
emotional, psychological wings. The student requires extra additional help which should be
given them in the classrooms as well as by referring these students to the Counselling Cell.
The Counsellor can also maintain meaningful information about the weak students. At the
start of new academic session, after the first MST, the probable weak student among new
entrants should be identified and the information can be circulated to other faculty members.

Role of concerned HOD:

The respective faculty mentors should consolidate the information and classify the weak
students in to different subject group, accordingly, the concerned HOD should be requested
to make arrangement the special classes the evening or weekend on the identified subjects
with the help internal and external resource persons.

The information about weak student should be circulated by first year coordinators to other
departments at the start of third semester so that the student are provided with extra support
and additional.
