GOAL:
To equip students with the latest academic as well as practical industry thinking in
the field of Construction Management, in order for them to learn to manage
construction process from start to completion while maintaining control over the
budget, schedule, quality for a sustainable project delivered with utmost safety.
OBJECTIVES:
• To introduce construction management as a stream of built environment
studies.
• To provide background of design management and give exposure to practical
cases and issues faced in the field of design management on built
environment projects.
• To understand the theory of procurement, tendering cycle, construction laws,
arbitration through the perspective of contracts administration through cases /
assignments.
• To understand the lean construction thinking and principles. Carry out
exercises on value stream mapping or similar lean methodologies in a
controlled classroom environment to give exposure to application of lean in
construction.
• To get abreast about construction management systems and procedures.
• To provide knowledge of construction planning, monitoring and control.
• To provide knowledge of cost planning and management.
• To provide knowledge of health and safety management, including
occupational health.
• To provide exposure of commissioning and handover management including
as-built information.

TEXT:
It is imperative that students understand the importance of construction
management within the framework of project management in built environment,
including but not limited to its challenges and opportunities, in the context of
infrastructure Management. The course also endeavors to look at all the variables,
stakeholders and systems & procedures, and their effects in delivery of
construction project.
EVALUATION:
PEDAGOGY:
With emphasis on individual and collaborative learning, the some part of the course
will be taught through the case method for certain relevant sub-topics. For every
topic, the background reading material will be provided and a case may be used for
class discussion.

Assignment: Please find one NIT from newspaper for a construction project, and
write a comparative (in 2 A4 pages) with the D2020 guidance note for the NIT you
have found. OR
Assignment: Find an arbitration case and explain & comment on the award granted.
Assignment: What are the various building services? Elaborate on alternative of any
one building service or utility, as if it were not possible to provide that.
Assignment: Explain budget, estimate, and cost plan and cost report with an
example of a construction project of not less than INR 1Cr.

Assignment: Source construction systems & procedure formats for Quality/ Safety/
Design Management / Cost monitoring from any of the large construction contracting
firm.
Assignment: What is the difference between Quality assurance & Quality control and
whose responsibility is each of that in the construction contracts?
Assignment: What are the Indian laws for Health & Safety in construction? OR What
are the latest statistics of productivity loss due to unsafe working condition on Indian
construction projects? Write a narrative with reference.
Assignment: Explain any one new technological development and your assignment
is to analyse its impact socially, politically, personally to you and professionally in the
built environment sector.
