Historical Background
On the day after Barbarossa, in the Lithuanian countryside, the confused and disorganized Russian command issued an order to their
armour reserves to counter attack into the flank of the advancing Germans. With no time for preparation of fuel or other supplies the
Russians haphazardly attacked. As dusk fell at Keltinenai the Soviet 28th Armoured Division attacked south against the 1st and 21st
German Infantry Divisions.
Between 12-15 Soviet tanks drove down the road the Germans placed a 37mm anti-tank gun at the fork in the road near the Butkaiciai
estate. The gun knocked out six of the tanks even though it was nearly overrun. The Soviet's fell back in disarray.
