Hubble Deep Field exercise – due by Friday April 12, 2019, at midnight

1. Go to http://deepfield.amazingspace.org/
and read the Orientation. You do not need to download the pdf file it mentions, nor do
you need to answer questions for that section.

2. Go back to the beginning and click on Stellar Statistician.

a. Enter online your estimate for the number of objects in the HDF, and record it here as
well:

3500

b. Go to the next page and click Camera A, B, or C, and then click a section, as indicated.
Count the number of objects and enter your estimate online, as well as here:
50

3. Now go back to the beginning to Cosmic Classifier. Click on Camera A, B, or C.

a. Fill out the Object Shape vs. Color chart, entering the number for each object in its
correct square.
b. Go to the next page and take a screenshot showing your chart next to the
astronomers’ chart, and upload it.

c. Read the next two pages and, looking at the astronomers’ classifications, comment on
the overall colors of the different types of galaxies:

Elliptical galaxies are mostly yellow and red, while spiral and irregular galaxies are
mainly blue and white.
d. Do these colors agree with what we see for local galaxies?

Yes, based on the classifications made by the Hubble sequence, these colors are
consistent with what we see for local galaxies.
