What do you think is our topic for

today? I think our topic for today is Subtraction of
Integers.

Very good!

D. Analysis

Class, Do you have any idea what is

subtraction of Integers? (Answer may vary)

Excellent! Thankyou.

we can proceed with subtraction of

Integers using the following steps:

Step 1: Leave the minuend unchanged.

Do you have any idea what is

Minuend? (Answer may vary)

Very Good!

Please read the definition of minuend? (Some student will raise hand)

Minuend is the first number in a Minuend - is the first number in a subtraction.

subtraction. It is the number from which It is the number from which another is to be
another is to be subtracted. subtracted.

Thankyou!

Let’s now go back to our second step.

Step 2: Change the subtraction sign to

addition sign.

Step 3: Change the subtrahend to its

opposite.

What is the meaning of subtrahend? Do

you have any idea? (Answer may vary)

Very good thankyou!

Please read the definition of

subtrahend? (Some student will raise hand)

Subtrahend is the first number in a Subtrahend is the first number in a

subtraction. It is the number to be subtraction. It is the number to be subtracted
subtracted from another. from another.

I will do the following steps of

subtraction of integers for you to
understand.

Okay class listened!

Examples no. 1: Subtract: (–5) – (+7)

Step no.1 : -5
Step no.2 : (-5) – (+7) to (-5) +
Step no.3 : (-5) + (+7) to (-5) + (-7)
Step no.4 : (-5) + (-7) = -12

Another example

Example no. 2 : Subtract –6 from 8

Re-write first 8-(-6)

What is the minuend? -6 (negative six)

Very good
Step no.1 : 8
Step no.2 : 8 - to 8 +
Step no.3 : 8 + (-6) to 8 + (+6)
Step no.4 : 8+6 = 14

Do you get it class? Yes mam

Okay that’s good

Another example.

Example no. 3 : Perform the indicated

operations: (–8) – (–2) + 7 .

What you think will you do if you see

this given? (Answer may vary)

Okay this is the solution

Listen class!

Solution: Perform addition and

subtraction from left to right

Step 1: Evaluate (–8) – (–2) first.

(–8) – (–2) = (-8) + (-2)

= -8 + 2
= -6

Step 2: Add –6 and 7.

(-6) + 7 = +(|7|-|-6|)
= +(7-6)
= +1 or 1

Therefore, (–8) – (–2) + 7 = 1

E. Abstraction

Do you get it grade 7? Yes mam!

Okay, if you really understand our

topic, I will write on board an example
of subtraction of integers and you will
solve it on your notebook and I will call
one to answer it on board! Understand? Yes mam!

Okay good! Try to solve this.

1. Subtract: (-12) – (14). 1. Subtract: (-12) – (14).

(-12) – (14) = (-12) + (14)
= (-12) + (-14)
= -26

2. Perform the indicated operations: 2. Perform the indicated operations:

(-12) + (-9) – 14
(-12) + (-9) - 14
1st : (-12) + (-9) = (-12) – (9)
= (-12) – 9
= -21

2nd : (-21) – 14 = +(|14| + |-21|)

= +(14+ (-21))
= -7 or 7
Very good class!

I think you already mastered the

Subtraction of Integers. Let’s have a
group activity.

F. Application

I need 2 groups, lets count 1 and 2.

Start! 1,2,1,2……,

All you have to do is to pick each one of a

group a folded paper that I have here and you
are going to solve it in a manila paper, and
choose one of your groupmates to explain your
answer in front. Understand class?

Before we start, what is our rules while doing a

group activity? Be quiet

Very good!

Okay please proceed to your groupmates!

Please be quite. You may start now!

Group 1: The Roman Empire started around Solution: We represent years BCE using
753 BCE and ended around 476 CE. How negative integers, and those years CE with the
many years did the Roman Empire last? positive integer.

From the given information,

we have start of Roman Empire = –753 (753

BCE)
end of Roman Empire = 476 (476 CE)

To find the number of years the empire lasted,

we have

length of Roman Empire in years

= end year – start year

= 476 – (–753)
= 476 + (+753)
= 1 229

Therefore, the Roman Empire lasted for about

1,229 years.

Group 2: The tallest mountain in the Solution: We denote heights above sea level
Philippines is Mt. Apo. It is about 2,954 m with positive integers and depths below sea
high above sea level. The deepest point known level with negative integers:
as the Galathea Depth, on the other hand, is
found in the Philippine Deep (also known as height of Mt. Apo = +2,954 (2,954 meters
Mindanao Trench) and reaches 10,542 m above sea level)
below sea level. What is the difference Galathea depth = –10,542 (10,542 meters
between the height of Mt. Apo and the below sea level)
Galathea Depth?
Difference between height of

Mt. Apo and Galathea Depth

= 2,954 – (–10,542)
= 2 954 + 10 542
= 13,596

Thus, the difference between the height of Mt.

Apo and the Galathea Depth is 13,496 meters.

G. Assessment

Get a 1/2 piece of paper and Perform the

indicated operations, show your solution.

1. (-7) – 14 1. (-7) – 14 = (-7) + (-14)

= -21

2. (-7) – (-14) 2. (-7) – (-14) = (-7) + 14

=7

3. 7 + (-10) – 4 3. 7 + (-10) – 4
1st : 7-10 = 3
2nd : 3-4 = +(|4|+|3|)
= +(4+3)
= +4 or 4

4. (-12) – (-6) – (-10) 4. (-12) – (-6) – (-10)

1st : (-12) – (-6) = (-12) + 6
= -6
2nd : -6 - (-10) = +(|-10|+|-6|)
= +(10+6)
= +16 or 16

5. 16 – (-15) – (-8) 5. 16 – (-15) – (-8)

1st : 16 – (-15) = 16 + 15
= 31
2nd : 31 - (-8) = +(|-8|+|31|)
= +(8+31)
= +39 or 39

Okay, you may start now.
