Himachal Pradesh Current Affairs - January 2019

Agreement for Renukaji Multipurpose Dam Project signed by 6 states: Ministry of Water Resources
On January 11, 2019, 6 states, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan and
Uttarakhand, in the presence of Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga
Rejuvenation, Road Transport & Highways and Shipping Shri Nitin Gadkari, signed an agreement
for Renukaji Multipurpose Dam Project in New Delhi.
i. Also a concession agreement was signed between U.P. Jal Nigam, NMCG and Prayagraj Water Pvt.
Ltd., for Namami Gange projects for the city of Prayagraj, under Hybrid Annuity Mode and One City One
Operator Concept.
Under Renukaji Dam Multipurpose Project:
i. 3 storage projects are proposed to be constructed on the river Yamuna and two of its tributaries – Tons and
Giri in the hilly regions of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh of Upper Yamuna Basin. These include:
• Lakhwar project on river Yamuna in Uttarakhand,
• Kishau on river Tons in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh and
• Renukaji on river Giri in Himachal Pradesh.
ii. Seen as National Projects since 2008, 90% funding of the cost of irrigation & drinking water component will
be provided by the Govt. of India as central assistance and the rest 10% would be borne by the beneficiary
states.
iii. The project will be executed by Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. (HPPCL) and will generate 40
MW of power during peak flow.
iv. This project will meet the drinking water needs of Delhi and the stored water of Renukaji Dam will be used
by
• UP, Haryana & NCT of Delhi from Hathnikund Barrage,
• by NCT of Delhi from Wazirabad Barrage and
• by UP, Haryana and Rajasthan from Okhla Barrage.
v. The total cost of the project was estimated on Price Level 2015 is Rs. 4596.76 Crores out of which central
assistance consists of Rs. 3892.83 croreand remaining Rs. 432.54 crore will be provided by the basin States of
Haryana, UP/UK, HP, Rajasthan & NCT of Delhi.

Himachal Pradesh celebrates its 49th full Statehood day-25th January


On 25th January, 2019 Himachal Pradesh celebrates its 49th full Statehood Day at Kunihaar in Solan, in lieu of
18th state of India with the sterling presence of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. At this occassion, Himachal
Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur encores for the speedy development along with an emphasis on
backward classes and mass areas.
Discussed Issues:
i. 1 lakh 20 thousand people will get gas connections under the Ujjawala Yojana in the next 5 months.
ii. 5 lakh rupees health cover under the HIMCARE project having premium of Rs 1000.
iii. 10% reservation to general economically weaker sections.

Harsimrat Kaur Badal inaugurates Cremica Food Park, the 1st Mega Food Park of Himachal Pradesh
Union Minister for Food Processing Industries,Harsimrat Kaur Badal inaugurated Cremica Mega Food Park
Pvt Ltd in Village Singhain ,Una District of Himachal Pradesh. This is the first Mega Food Park
operationalized in the State of Himachal Pradesh.
About the food park
i. This Mega Food Park has been set up in 52.40 acre of land at a cost of Rs. 107.34 crore.
ii. The park have a common administrative building for office and other uses at Solan, Mandi, and Kangra.
iii. Ministry of Food Processing Industries implemented Mega Food Park Scheme in the country, to give a major
boost to the food processing sector by adding value and reducing food wastage .

Himachal Pradesh Assembly passed a Bill to make Sanskrit as the second official language of the state
On 16th February 2019, a bill was passed in the Himachal Pradesh assembly to
make Sanskrit the second official language of the state.
Key Points
i. Mahender Singh Thakur, the Irrigation and Public Health minister introduced the bill Himachal
Pradesh Official Language Bill, 2019 (Amendment).
ii. The bill was introduced in the absence of Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and was passed without
discussion.
iii. With this, Himachal Pradesh became the second state to adopt Sanskrit as the second official language of
the state after Uttarakhand.
The other bills passed during the same session:
• Himachal Pradesh University of Health Sciences Amendment Bill, 2019 to rename Himachal
Pradesh University of Health Sciences as Atal Medical and Research University, Himachal
Pradesh.
• Himachal Pradesh Bovine Breeding Bill, 2019 to promote indigenous species of cows in the state by
setting up sperm stations and using frozen semen in artificial insemination.

$40 million loan agreement signed between Centre, Himachal Pradesh and World Bank for Shimla
water supply
A loan agreement of $40 million (4 crore INR) was signed between the Government of India, Government of
Himachal Pradesh and World Bank, for bringing clean and reliable drinking water to the citizens of Greater
Shimla area, who have been facing severe shortages of water and water-borne epidemics in the last few years.
i. Shimla Water Supply and Sewerage Service Delivery Reform Programmatic Development Policy Loan
1 is expected to improve Water Supply & Sanitation (WSS) services in and around Shimla.
ii. Loan agreement was signed by Mr. Sameer Kumar Khare, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic
Affairs, Ministry of Finance, on behalf of the Government of India and Mr. Junaid Kamal Ahmad, Country
Director, World Bank India, on behalf of the World Bank.
iii. Project Agreement was signed by Mr. Prabodh Saxena, Principal Secretary, Urban Development
Department, on behalf of the Government of Himachal Pradesh and Mr. Junaid Kamal Ahmad, Country
Director, World Bank India, on behalf of the World Bank.
Reason for agreement:
The reason behind this agreement is not meeting the current requirement of 56 million litres daily (MLD), as
the capacity of Shimla’s water supply infrastructure is 40 MLD.

Himachal’s growth rate projected at 7.3% in current financial year


Economic Survey Report for 2018-19 has projected the growth rate in Himachal Pradesh to be
around 7.3% for the current financial year, 2018-19, while the per capita income is estimated at Rs 1,76,968.

Economic growth was 6.5% in the last fiscal, highest in last 3 years.
Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) in current fiscal has increased to Rs 1,36,542 crore and estimated to
be about Rs 1,51,835 crore in 2018-19.

Himachal Pradesh government declared Monkeys as vermin


Monkey’s are declared as vermin by the Himachal Pradesh government again,in 11 districts,91 tehsils and
sub-tehsils for the next one year.Previously,monkeys were declared as vermin in 38 tehsils and sub-tehsils of
10 districts in the year 2016 and which was further extended to next year on December 20, 2017.
About Vermin:
Vermin are pests or wild animals that are believed to be harmful to crops, farm animals, or game, or which
carry disease.

An MoU on Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence signed by HP and Andhra Pradesh government
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between HP Inc. India (Hewlett-Packard) and Andhra
Pradesh Innovation Society (APIS) and Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB) for
constructing a Center of Excellence (CoE) for additive manufacturing powered by HP’s 3D printing technology.
Key Points:
i. It aims to promote 3D printing in various sectors such as automotive, aerospace, defence, consumer goods,
healthcare, apparel and construction .
ii. While HP will provide technical expertise to the project, Andhra Pradesh Innovation Society (APIS) will
provide infrastructural support and provide necessary certifications and accreditations. Andhra Pradesh
Economic Development Board (APEDB) will promote the utilisation of the Center of Excellence by government
departments, defence and public sector enterprises, start-ups, small and medium enterprises etc.

Tashigang becomes the World’s highest Polling station


Tashigang at an altitude of 15,256 feet has now became the world’s highest polling station in the sleepy
hamlet of Buddhist-dominated Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.
Key points:
i. Tashigang polling station falls in one of the 17 assembly segments that form the Mandi Lok Sabha seat.
ii. This polling station covers two villages of Tashigang and Gete. As per the revised electoral rolls, the two
villages have 48 voters, of which 30 are men and 18 women.

On 15th April, 2019: the 72nd Himachal Day celebrated in Himachal Pradesh
The 72nd Himachal Day was celebrated in Himachal Pradesh on the 15th of April, 2019. In order to mark the
red-lettered day, Governor Acharya Devvrat unfurled the national flag at an event on The Ridge Maidaan in
Shimla. He then inspected a parade led by Shakti Singh, the Parade Commander Deputy Superintendent of
Police, in which contingents of state police, home guards, NCC cadets, Bharat Scouts and Guides participated.
i. Himachal Day or Himachal Pradesh Statehood Day is celebrated as a public holiday to commemorate
the creation of Himachal Pradesh.
ii. After the independence from British rule in 1947, Himachal Pradesh was created as a province on 15 April
1948.
iii. Before India’s independence, Himachal Pradesh was divided into regions, namely, Chamba, Mandi, Shimla
etc, after which in 1948, the state was declared as a union territory.

iv. The union territory was declared as a separate state again in 1970. On 25th January 1971, it became
the 18thstate of India with Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar as its first chief minister.

Meteorological Department issues ‘Yellow’ weather warning for Himachal Pradesh


On 7th April, 2019, The Meteorological Department issued a yellow weather warning for rain in Himachal
Pradesh by forecasting thunderstorm with hail in isolated places over the state.
Key points
i. Meteorological Department has issued colour-coded warnings to alert people ahead of severe or hazardous
weather.
ii. Code color yellow is the least dangerous weather warning which indicates the possibility of severe
weather over the next few days that could affect people.

Former Himachal Pradesh Minister Chaudhary Vidyasagar Died at 84


On 25th April 2019, Former Himachal Pradesh minister and senior BJP leader Chaudhary Vidyasagar died
at his home in Zamanabad area in Kangra near Dharamshala at the age of 84 due to age-related ailments.
Key points:
i. He was elected four times as MLA from Kangra assembly constituency.
ii. The OBC leader in the region had worked as a minister in the state governments led by Shanta Kumar and
Prem Kumar Dhumal.

Himachal Pradesh Current Affairs - June 2019


Justice V Ramasubramanian sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court
Judge of Telangana High Court, Justice V Ramasubramanian sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Himachal
Pradesh High Court.He succeeded Chief Justice Surya Kant.
KeyPoints:
i.His Oath taking ceremony was administered by Governor Acharya Devvrat.
ii.Apart from Telangana High Court earlier, he served as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court from July
31, 2006 and as permanent Judge from November 9, 2009.
iii.Then he served Andhra Pradesh High Court from April 27, 2016.
