4th Yr MSc, Instruction: Answer all questions

1. (a) An electron of mass m in a 3D box with energy 3n fl /ma is subjected to a constant, weak electric
field along z. Compute the first order correction to the electron's energy. (5)

(b) The box is now made 2D and the perturbation is Axy, where A is constant, small compared to the
ground state energy of the electron. Find the first order corrections in energy to the ground state and
the first excited states. (5)

2. (a) Find the lowest upper bound to the ground state energy of a particle in a potential ax starting

from a Gaussian trial w.f. .J¥ exp(-yi) where vis the variational parameter. (5)

(b) Use the same w.f. to find the lowest upper bound to ground state energy for a potential a Ix j. (5)

3. A particle of mass m starts out in the ground state of an infinite square well between [O,a]. Now a
wall is slowly erected slightly off-centre by a potential

V(x) =f(t)cS(x-a/2-E) where f(t) rises very slowly from 0 to infinity.

(a) Find and sketch the ground state at t=infinity (3)

(b) Show that the equation for the ground state is

z sin z =T{cos z- cos (zp)) where z=ka, T=maf(t)/fl 2 , p=2E/a and k~ /h. (7)
