7th Grade iRead Program

Goal: To create lifelong readers! Students will be introduced
to literature of all kinds and offered incentives for reading.
The reading program is structured to support readers at all
levels and reading abilities.

Requirements
➔ Read at home at least 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week. We will read-alouds most days in class.
➔ What will be graded?
◆ Complete a daily reading check-in where they will need to fill out what they read each day. Points
will be given weekly for completing the tracker. Reading daily is crucial!
➔ ANY book appropriate for a student’s level will count as an iRead book.
➔ We have created a book equivalency measure for larger books:

Page # Equivalency Page #  Equivalency
0-324 1 book 800-949 5 books
325-499 2 books 950-1099 6 books
500-649 3 books 1100-1249 7 books
650-799 4 books

Passing Off A Book
➔ When a student finishes a book they will write the title, and which trimester they completed it in on a square
in their bingo card that is glued in their Reader/Writer Notebook. I will show them how this is to be done.
➔ They will complete their daily reading check-in
➔ I will then initial their bingo card and grade their response.
➔ Books checks will be entered every other week. If a student reads multiple books between book checks, I
will still just enter one book in gradebook and they only have to do one weekly response as required. I will
check off the additional books and they will begin to accumulate towards entry into the iRead club.

PLEASE BE HONEST IN COMPLETING YOUR READING!

Celebrations!
➔ A student will work on getting “bingos” on their bingo card. Bingos prizes are candy.
➔ They may be random surprise rewards for students reading at home the previous night, being on track
with books, and will offer optional special holiday reading challenges.
➔ Every 6 weeks (at each midterm and new trimester) there will be a celebration in the Language Arts
department. Only students completing 4 books during that window will be invited to participate. The tally
of those 4 books (for the celebration) will begin new each time. Meaning, if you don’t read 4 books for the
first party, try again and qualify for the next party!
➔ Every book read will count towards a cumulative total. A full bingo card (36 books of varied genres) is
required to qualify for the iRead Club!! To stay on track, you’ll want to read the equivalent of around 12
books a trimester.
◆ If a student achieves entrance into the iRead Club they’ll receive a candy bar, awesome t-shirt and a
ticket to attend our epic iRead Party on Wednesday, May 6th.

Sponsorship
Our iRead program operates solely on donations. We are so grateful for the support of community parents and
businesses that value literacy. There is a letter coming home (and through email) asking for business sponsors. Your
logo will go on the back of our t-shirts. We appreciate your support and enjoy promoting your business as you
promote our efforts to increase literacy!
