Starbucks was first opened in Seattle, Washington, on March 31, 1971 by three partners
who met while they were students at the University of San Francisco. English teacher Jerry
Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegel, and writer Gordon Bowker were inspired to sell high-quality
coffee beans and equipment by coffee roasting entrepreneur Alfred Peet after he taught them
his style of roasting beans. Bowker recalls that Terry Heckler, with whom Bowker owned an
advertising agency, thought words beginning with "st" were powerful. The founders
brainstormed a list of words beginning with "st", and eventually landed on "Starbo", a mining
town in the Cascade Range. From there, the group remembered "Starbuck," the name of
the chief mate in the book Moby-Dick. And that’s how Starbucks name made.

On January 26, 2016, it is the turn of Starbucks in Mandaluyong City in the Philippines
when a female customer, named Jessa ordered food and coffee. She did not finish the coffee,
so she brought the cup on her way home. However, Jessa claims she felt something inside the
drink and when she stirred it with the straw she found a lifeless mouse inside the cup. Jessa
rushed to the Mandaluyong police station to blotter the incident after the branch manager
denied that the dead rodent was part of the product they had served to her. Representatives of
the city health and sanitation office who went there the following day for an ocular inspection
reportedly said the branch showed complete permits but previously declined inspection, adding
that they first wanted to check the authenticity of the mission order.

SECTORS INVOLVED:

Government

● The members of the Health and Sanitation Office of Mandaluyong City have inspected
the Starbucks Coffee branch in Addition Hills, following a complaint by a customer who
allegedly found a dead rat in her drink.
● The health officials said that based on the demonstration of the former barista, it is
impossible for a rat or any kind of insect to be mixed with the drink.
● They also inspected the branch's kitchen and storage room, and found no irregularities.

Media

● A former barista of Starbucks posted a video on facebook demonstrating on how to

make the drink ordered by the complainant.
● Starbucks Philippines has also released a statement, saying that it is taking such claims
"very seriously," and has launched an investigation into the customer's complaint.
