SLO Alignment/Activity

1: Field Knowledge Teacher candidates wrote blog posts before and


after shadowing students. The student shadow
experience has become common for teachers and
administrators who want to take on the
perspectives of their students. Many teachers are
also developing their online presence through
social media, blogging, and Teachers Pay
Teachers. Thus, this writing assignment was a
teacher leadership practice.

2: Source Material Students read a blog post by Alexis Wiggins and


watched a TED Talk by Adora Svitak before
completing their first blog post. The student
shadow experience provided evidence for
reflection for the second blog post.

3: Synthesize Viewpoints The pre- and post- blog posts required students
to reflect on their own experiences as middle
school students, observations of middle school
students, course readings and media, and the
perspectives of their student mentor.

4: Genre & Framework Students used the genre of blogging for this
assignment.

5: Conclusions & Applications Students wrote about their student shadow
experiences which will help them to take the
perspective of their future students including in
designing instruction and in managing their
classrooms. Teacher candidates can use blogging
in their professional portfolios or in establishing
an online professional presence.

6: Reflection Both the pre- and post- blogs required students to


reflect on their experiences.
