contemporary rendition of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby .

Activity Describe what the learning activity will be. What The lesson may begin with the class reading and
will the students and the teacher be doing? (This includes
what they are doing with the technology). Many people tend
discussing Fitzgerald’s novel. After a discussion has
to find this part easier if they number the action in order and ensued, the teacher will explain that many themes
think of this from the view of a substitute teacher. This lesson
was left on the desk, can you follow it and teach the class
and motifs found in our classical literature can be
today? found in contemporary society. The students will be
asked to create a comic.
This comic may cover any portion of The Great
Gatsby. It must be at least three panels long with
pictures and writing that reflect how the scene may
look if it occurred today. How might the scene look
through a 21st Century lens? The strip must express
the theme, motif, or universal character with a
modern twist, and it must be done using the students’
own words.
To begin, the students will each grab a Chromebook
and go to www.toondoo.com to create the “toon.”
The students will create a free account and a
minimum of one character to create a scene from the
novel with a contemporary viewpoint. The students
will be required to save the toon and submit it via
Blackboard or Google Classroom. This activity should
promote the students to not only analyze themes and
motifs found throughout classical literature, but it
should also allow the students to see that many of
these themes are able to be related to contemporary
society and literature. Many of the stories the Greats
wrote are still quite prevalent in today’s society and
this activity is designed to show the students that,
though the book is based in the 1920’s, the story itself
may not be much different than a story like The
Gilded Life of Matilda Duplaine by Alex Brunkhorst
written in 2015/2016.
