ADVANCED LEVEL TEST AUTOMATION

ENGINEER

OVERVIEW
The ISTQB (Advanced) Test Automation Engineer training is intended for those who have
ample experience in testing in general and who have specific knowledge of or are deeply
interested in test automation. Test Automation Engineers do not only have the ability to design,
develop and maintain test automation solutions, but also have sufficient knowledge and
experience to help organisations and projects plot the right course. This training therefore
focuses on both theory and practice, discussing, for instance, the architecture of the test
automation solution as well as the practical aspects of implementing and transforming manual
tests..
This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement
automation for software projects. The course focuses on the concepts, methods, tools, and
processes for automating dynamic functional tests and the relationship of those tests to test
management, configuration management, defect management, software development and quality
assurance processes.
Methods described are generally applicable across a variety of software lifecycle
approaches (e.g., agile, sequential, incremental, iterative), types of software systems (e.g.,
embedded, distributed, mobile) and test types (functional and non-functional testing).

OBJECTIVE
Advanced Test Automation Engineers should be able to demonstrate their skills in the following
areas:
1. Explain the objectives, advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of test automation.
2. Identify technical success factors of a test automation project.
3. Analyze a system under test to determine the appropriate automation solution.
4. Analyze test automation tools for a given project and report technical findings and
recommendations.
5. Understand "design for testability" and "design for test automation" methods applicable to
the SUT.
6. Explain the structure of the Generic Test Automation Architecture.
7. Analyze factors of implementation, use, and maintenance requirements for a given Test
Automation Solution.
8. Explain the factors to be considered when identifying reusability of components.
9. Apply guidelines that support effective test tool pilot and deployment activities.
10. Analyze deployment risks and identify technical issues that could lead to failure of the test
automation project, and plan mitigation strategies.
11. Understand which factors support and affect maintainability.
12. Classify metrics that can be used to monitor the test automation strategy and effectiveness.
13. Explain how a test execution report is constructed and published.
14. Apply criteria for determining the suitability of tests for automation.
15. Understand the factors in transitioning from manual to automation testing.
16. Explain the factors to consider in implementing automated regression testing, new feature
testing, and confirmation testing.
17. Verify the correctness of an automated test environment including test tool setup.
18. Verify the correct behaviour for a given automated test script and/or test suite.
19. Analyze the technical aspects of a deployed test automation solution and provide
recommendations for improvement.
