6) DISCUSSION & RECOMMENDATIONS:

6.1) The general stratification of this site was comprise of filling/ dump material at the top followed by
clayey sandy soil up to certain depth. This layer was underlying alternate layer of highly weathered
and weathered yellowish Mica Schist up to the depth of investigation.

6.2) Seepage of water was observed up to 6.00m depth and this factor should be considered at design
stage.

6.3) At all locations for allowable bearing capacity calculation and other for recommendations the depth
was considered from original ground level excluding the depth of top dump material.

6.4) All the dump material should be removed before execution of work. In no case foundation should be
rested on filling /dump material.

6.5) For major structure Raft foundation shall be provided at all test locations and rested at min. 7.5m
depth from OGL. At this depth recommended allowable bearing capacity of 20.00 T/m2 and 11.00
T/m2 may be considered with 50mm & 25mm permissible settlement respectively. Below PCC a
min.150mm thick well graded sand layer shall be provided.
For light structure isolated foundation may be provided at all test locations and it shall be rested at
3.00m to 4.50m depth from OGL. At these depths recommended allowable bearing capacity of 9.00
2 2
T/m and 11.00 T/m may be considered with 50mm permissible settlement respectively.
At foundation level of same structure different stratification (Soft/hard) may encountered hence there
are chances of differential settlement. So foundation shall be designed considering this aspect with
lower permissible settlement.

6.6) At all locations, foundation level strata should be verified / confirmed before laying foundation.

6.7) Rock samples were partially soluble when immersed in water for 24hrs.

6.8) Well graded strong cohesionless granular material with good drainage properties & high
compressive strength should be utilised for back filling and it should be compacted in layers to
minimum 95% of maximum dry density. Back filling shall not be compacted with free water on the
surface.

6.9) For design of flexible pavement CBR value of 6% at 1.74 g/cm3 MDD with 14.40% OMC ( Heavy
compaction) may be considered at 0.50m depth from OGL.

6.10) Result of chemical analysis of soil and water are presented Annexure VI of this report.

SAFE BEARING CAPACITY FOR CLAYEY SOIL BY SHEAR FAILURE CRITERIA:

BH-3

Depth (Dt) = 3.00m

For width of foundation B = 6m

As per the report C = 39 kN/m2 & φ = 6.5 0 φ' = 4.37 Bulk unit weight (γ) = 18 kN/m3

q = γ x Dt = 18 x 3.00 = 54.00 kN/m2

Based on φ' value N’c = 6.32 N’q = 1.50 N’γγ = 0.39

Assuming the depth factor, shape factor and load inclination factors as unity (1) &
assuming the water table correction factor as 0.5.Since φ = 6.5 0 local shear failure is
considered. The ultimate bearing capacity is calculated as under: IS 6403 Clause -5.1.2

q`d = 2/3 C x N’c x Sc x dc x ic +q (N’q – 1) Sq x dq x iq + 0.5 x B x γ x Ν’γγ x Sγγ x dγγ x iγγ x W`

= 237.55 + 32.40 + 8.42

Total Consolidation Settlement in mm 33.56

*Note: K = Influence factor for uniformly loaded rectangular area by After Newmark’s 1935.

Total settlement S = immediate settlement Si + consolidation settlement Sc

= 2.55 + 33.56
= 36.11 mm

Correction for depth factor = 0.85 (as per fig. 12 of IS: 8009)

Total Settlement after Correction = 30.69< permissible settlement (50mm)

For pressure intensity of 9.00t/m2 the total settlement is within the permissible limit. To keep the
differential settlement within the limit the size of the footing must be proportionate.

Hence the recommended allowable bearing capacity at 3.00m for footing size of 6m is 9.00
T/m2

SAMPLE CALCULATIONS

SAFE BEARING CAPACITY FOR COHESIONLESS SOIL BY SHEAR FAILURE CRITERIA FROM
SPT N-VALUE:

BH-1
Depth (Dt) = 5.00m

For width of foundation B = 6m

As per the report N= 41 N’’ = 28 φ = 35.5 Bulk unit weight (γ) = 18 kN/m3

q = γ x dt = 18 x 5.00 = 90.00 kN/m2

Based on φ' value N’q = 11.50 N’γγ = 12.13

Assuming the depth factor, shape factor and load inclination factors as unity (1) & assuming the
water table correction factor as 0.5.Since φ = 35.5 local shear is considered. The ultimate bearing
capacity is calculated as under: IS 6403 Clause -5.2.2.1

q`d = q (N’q – 1) Sq x dq x iq + 0.5 x B x γ x Ν’γγ x Sγγ x dγγ x iγγ x W`

= 1317.48 + 304.40
= 1621.88 kN/m2
= 165.33 T/m2
Considering factor of safety = 3
qs = 55.11 T/m2

SAFE BEARING PRESSURE BY SETTLEMENT CRITERIA:

The SBC work out by shear failure criteria to be check for settlement for foundation resting on
cohesionless soil.
Permissible settlement = 50mm
N =41 N’’ = 28

As per IS -8009 from fig. 9

Settlement -11 mm for 10 T/m2

Applying water table correction of 0.50

Settlement= 11/0.5=22 mm

Hence for permissible settlement of 50 mm

SBC= 10/22 x 50 = 22.72 ≈ 22.00 T/m2 at depth 5.00m.

Hence allowable bearing capacity at 5.00m for footing size of 6m is 22.00 T/m2 for isolated
footing.
