Atmos Pipe
One of the most proven pipeline leak detection
systems in the world, based on statistical volume
balance

The challenge To provide maximum support to pipeline operating

companies, a leak detection system should:
Loss of product from a pipeline is extremely costly
to any company for many reasons: • Detect leaks quickly

Life and property: Spills can cause explosions • Locate leaks accurately
that kill or harm people and property. • Issue minimal false alarms
Financial: The loss of pipeline product costs • Be easy to retro-fit
millions of dollars. Extremely high fines are
• Work effectively under all operating
imposed on the company even if the spill is not the conditions
fault of the company.
• Use sensors with high reliability and low
Environmental: Spills, particularly into water maintenance
systems, damage the environment and kill great
numbers of wildlife.
Reputational: A product spill will cause severe Main features
damage to reputation. Reputation management • Field proven for 20 years on more than 600
is critical as the public become more sensitive to pipelines
environmental issues; if mismanaged it can cost • Minimum false alarms
millions of dollars.
• Detects onset and existing leaks
• Leak location accuracy: as low as ± 1000m
• Leak detection size: less than 0.25% of the
flow with high quality instrumentation
• Applied to pipelines between 3 KM and 1910
KM in length and 0.5” and 48” in diameter
• Software based solution, using flow and
pressure data from a SCADA or PLC system
• Detects leaks under all operating conditions
with negligible reduction in minimum
detectable leak size during transients
• Fully compliant with: -
Shell Pipeline Leak Detection
Recommendations (DEP 31.40.60.11-
Gen)
API 1130, API 1155, API 1149
German Regulations for Pipeline Leak
Detection (TRFL).

What is Atmos Pipe?
Since its inception as the first statistical volume
balance system in 1995, Atmos Pipe has been
at the forefront of leak detection technology. It is
operational in many leading oil and gas companies
worldwide.
Atmos Pipe is a statistical volume balance leak
detection system. It uses the powerful Sequential
Probability Ratio Test (SPRT) and pressure and
flow analysis to optimize the leak detection.
At Atmos, we understand every pipeline has its
own personality. The design of Atmos Pipe allows
our engineers to configure and tune each system
to minimize the effect of:
• Instrument faults including
telecommunication failures
• Operational changes from shut-in to start-up Atmos Pipe is proven to detect leaks through transient conditions
and running
System outputs
• Fluid property changes
• Leak alarm
• Seasonal changes or supply and demand
variations • Leak location

• Instrument drifts or calibrations • Leak rate and volume lost

• Leak time
Atmos Pipe identifies operational changes in the
pipeline and continues to detect small leaks during • Watchdogs via OPC
transients.

About Atmos International

Atmos International (Atmos) provides pipeline leak detection and simulation technology to the oil, gas, water and associated
industries. The company was founded in 1995 in the UK by the inventor of the statistical pipeline leak detection system – Atmos Pipe,
now one of a suite of leak detection solutions from Atmos. These technologies are implemented on over 600 pipelines in 55 countries,
including major oil and gas companies such as Shell, BP, ExxonMobil, and Total. With associated offices in the USA, China, Russia,
Singapore, and Costa Rica, and local agents in 28 countries, the multi-cultural and multilingual team can provide effective support all
over the world.
