ABSTRACT
Background : Acne vulgaris is an inflammation accompanied by blockage of oil
glands of skin and hair. Generally incident occurred at around the age of 14-17 years
in women 16-19 years in men. The main factors involved in the formation of acne
vulgaris is the increased production of sebum, the decay of keratinocytes, the growth
of bacteria and inflammation. Indonesia is a tropical climate and has a considerable
diversity so as to have a source of medicinal raw materials, especially the traditional
medicine as traditional medicine mostly derived from plants. Purple eggplant peel
extract is a plant that has been proven scientifically has antibacterial activity.
Aim : To determine antibacterial effectiveness of skin extract purple eggplant
(Solanum melongena L.) against most microorganisms are found as the cause of acne
vulgaris.

Method : The study was conducted with a cross-sectional design (cross-sectional)

and true experimental.Namely by identifying microorganisms that cause acne vulgaris
and to test the inhibitory bark extract purple eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) against
most microorganisms are found, then the measured minimal inhibitory zone diameters
were formed and compared with a positive control of ciprofloxacin.

Result : Microorganisms that cause acne vulgaris found bacteria Pseudomonas

aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus
epidermidis. Most bacteria found were Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus
epidermidis and phytochemical test results proved purple eggplant skin extract
containing flavonoids. tannin, and sapponin. Purple eggplant skin extract at
concentrations of 50%, and 75% in Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus
epidermidis shows the results with weak inhibition zone, while at 100% concentration
on the show staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis results with
moderate inhibition zone.
Keywords: Acne vulgaris, purple eggplant skin extract, effectiveness,
Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and
Staphylococcus epidermidis.
