My First Spelling Book
Welcome to My First Spelling Book! It is intended to be a bonus and
supplemental resource for the Ready for Reading: Level 1 beginning phonics
curriculum!
Not all children using Ready for Reading will be ready for spelling! This is truly
an optional tool and should only be used with children who are expressing
interest in writing and spelling!
For all children, keep spelling light and fun! Introduce the spelling activities as
as a listening game!
“I am going to tell you a sound! See if you can write the mystery letter that
makes my sound!”
Always have an alphabet strip or other visual reminder of the letters out and
within view of your child during spelling!
Feel free to use other materials to practice spelling—kids love spelling in sand,
finger-paint, or with letter tiles!
My First Spelling Book can be included as a game activity on your weekly lesson
plans, be substituted for flashcards or worksheets, or be an activity done on an
optional 5th day of the week!

Teacher Guide/Instructions:
Weeks 1-8:
• Child is provided a picture.
• Ask them to name the picture and identify the first sound of the picture.
• Instruct your child to write the letter that makes the sound.
Week: 9-26:
• Give your child a letter sound.
• Ask them to write the letter that makes that sound.
“I am going to tell you a letter sound! Listen carefully! Write the mystery letter
that makes my sound!” (Say letter sound.)
• After your child writes the letter, ask them to say the name of the letter. Offer
help or assist them in naming the letter as needed.
• Give your child a spelling word. A picture clue and spaces for each letter are
provided.
*Tip: Use alphabet flashcards to test letter sounds and present them in a
random order. Go through the stack of letter flashcards that have been
introduced. Say the sound of the letter—not the letter name!

List of Letter Sounds and Words Assessed:
Present the letter sounds in random order (use flashcards to help with this—or cross
letters off the list below to help you keep track of sounds given during a spelling test).
Explain to your child that the letter Qu always goes with the letter Uu when we
see or write it!
