We are beginning our unit on Addition Strategies. We hope this informational letter will help 
you understand what we are learning in class. We also hope this will serve as a tool to help your 
child with math at home. Below you will find the Georgia Standards of Excellence for our 
upcoming unit. We have also included important vocabulary and examples for each standard we 
are studying.

Second Grade Math Teachers

Our tentative test date for this unit is ​Friday, August 23rd. ​This date may change as the 
unit progresses. Please always check weekly newsletters for updated test dates. 
 
Math Standard: 
1. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems by 
using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the 
problem. (MGSE2.OA.1) 
2. Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know 
from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers (MGSE2.OA.2) 
3. Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties 
of operations (MGSE2.NBT.9)
