FIRST QUARTER EXAMINATION IN PHYSICS I

Name: _________________________________________ Score: ____________
Grade and Section: _______________________________ Date: _____________
I. PROBLEM SOLVING (120 points): Read each problem carefully and answer on a separate sheet of paper. Be sure
to show your complete solution.
1. A mountain climbing expedition establishes a base camp and two intermediate camps, A and B. Camp A is 11,200
m east of and 3,200 m above base camp. Camp B is 8,400 m east of and 1,700 m higher than Camp A.
a. Determine the displacement between base camp and Camp A.
b. Determine the displacement between base camp and Camp B.
2. Calculate both the distance and the magnitude of the displacement of the Earth:
Note: One astronomical unit is the mean distance from the Earth to the sun.
Segment Time Distance Displacement
1 orbit
½ orbit
¼ orbit
3. Two trains, each having a speed of 30 km/h, are headed at each other on the same straight track. A bird that can
fly at 60 km/h flies off the front of one of the train when they are 60 km apart and heads directly back to the first
train, the bird flies directly back to the first train, and so on. What is the total distance the bird travels before the
trains collide?
4. The 1992 world speed record for a bike (human powered vehicle) was set by Chris Huber, and his time through
measured 200 m stretch was a sizzling 6.509 seconds, at which he commented, "Cogito erg go Zoom!" Sam
Whittingam beat Huber's record in 2001 by 19.0 km/h. what was Sam's time the 200 m?
5. Juan travels in an airplane a distance of 1920 km. For one-fourth of the distance, the airplane flies at a speed of
840 km/h, and for the rest of the distance, it flies at a speed of 880 km/h. How long does the trip take?
6. A police car drives 8 km with a constant speed of 96 km/h and another 216 km with a constant speed of 96 km/h.
How much time in total does it take to travel these distances?
7. John rides his bike with a constant speed of 16 km/h. How far can he travel in 60 minutes?
8. Jack is approaching a stoplight moving with a velocity of +30.0 m/s. The light turns yellow, and Jack applies the
brakes and skids to a stop. If Jack's acceleration is -8.00 m/s2, then determine the displacement of the car during
the skidding process. (Note that the direction of the velocity and the acceleration vectors are denoted by a + and a
- sign.)
9. Ben is waiting at a stoplight. When it finally turns green, Ben accelerated from rest at a rate of a 6.00 m/s2 for a
time of 4.10 seconds. Determine the displacement of Ben's car during this time period.
10. A cyclist in the Tour de France accelerates down a hill from 22 m/s to a speed of 37 m/s . This acceleration takes
him 2 seconds. Calculate the acceleration.
11. A car advertisement states that a certain car can accelerate from rest to 70 km/h in 7 seconds. Find the car’s
average acceleration.
12. If a Ferrari with an initial velocity of 10 m/accelerates at a rate of 50 m/2 for 3 seconds, what will its final velocity
be?
13. Complete the following table.
Acceleration (m/s2) Starting speed (m/s) Final speed (m/s) Time taken (s)
2 6 2
2 5 25
10 4 2
8 5 10
4 8 2
