5. Review

Before we proceed to our new lesson.

Let’s have a short review about our
discussion last time.

What is our topic yesterday? Our topic yesterday is about Graphing

linear Equation using two points

Very Good! And how do we graph a We graph linear equation by means of

linear equation using two points? assigning any two values for x, to get
the points.

Excellent, and after getting the points We will plot and graph it on the
what are we going to do next? Cartesian Plane.

Very Good Everyone! Please give (the student will clap)

yourselves an Aling Dionisia Clap.

It seems that you are ready for our next

topic.
B. Motivation

Let’s play.

Do you know the game “Pictionary”? No, Sir.

Pictionary is a guessing game that

includes pictures to represents a hidden
words or common phrase.

On this activity, your task is to decode

the word that the Pictionary suppose to
represent. Is that clear? Yes, Sir.

If you know the answer, raise your

hand and say the hidden word aloud.
The one who got the correct answer
will be given a special price.

Are you ready? Aye! Aye! Captain.

INTERCEPT

What is the last word we form? Sir, the last word we form is Intercept.

Very good and what have you notice to The line intersect the x and y axis.
the illustration I have given you?
Observe the point in the line.

Exactly, the line intersect the x and y Intercepts are points where the graph

can you define an intercepts?

Very Good, everyone, please give

yourselves a Good Job Clap.
c. Lesson Proper

From the previous activity? Do you It is graphing linear equation using x

have any idea of what would be our and y intercept.
lesson for today?

Very Good, so for today’s lesson, it

involves the graph of the x and y
intercept of the linear equation.

It is “Graphing Linear Equation using

the X and Y intercepts.”

Let’s bring back the graph we used Point A intersects the x-axis
earlier. Observed the points in the lines.
Which of the point intersects the x-
axis?

What is the coordinates of point A?

(2,0)
What is the abscissa or x-coordinate of
Point A? The abscissa is 2.

Very Good, therefore 2 is our x-

intercept. And based on that example, X-intercept is the abscissa of the
how will you define an x-intercept. coordinate of the point where the graph
intersects the x-axis
What about Point B? Where does it
intersect? Point B intersects the y-axis

What is the coordinates of point B?

(0,1)
And what is the ordinate or y-
coordinate of point B? The ordinate is 1

Excellent, so our y-intercept is 1. How

can you define y-intercept, based on Y intercept is the ordinate of the
that given example? coordinates of the point where the
graph intersects y-axis
Very Good, everyone. Please give
yourselves a round of applause. (the student will clap)

Therefore, x-intercept can be

represented as (a, 0) where a is our x-
intercept when y=0 and y-intercept
represented as (0, b), where b is the y-
intercept, when x=0.

Now, take a look on these examples.

1. Find the x and y intercept of the

equation y=2x+1 and plot it on the
Cartesian Plane.

What is the given equation? y = 2x + 1

Let’s first find the x-intercept of this
equation.

Again, what we’re going to do to solve We let y=0, and solve for the value
for x-intercept? of x.

If y= 0, Who wants to find the x y = 2x + 1

intercept of y=2x+1? 0 = 2x + 1
-1 + 0 = 2x + 1 -1
-1 = 2x
-1/2 = 2x/2
-1/2 = x

What is the value of our x-intercept? x =-1/2

If x-intercept can be represented as (a, (- ½ , 0) Sir.

0), what would be our coordinates?
(the student will clap)
Very Good, let’s give ____ three claps.
Sir, we let x=0 and solve for the
How about y intercept? If in x-intercept value of y,
we let y=0, what about on this one?

Who can solve for the value of y- let x=0 and solve for the value of y,
intercept, will you please stand up and y = 2x + 1
solve it on the board? y = 2(0) + 1
y=0+1
y=1
What is the value of our y-intercept?
Sir, y = 1.
If we can represent y-intercept as (0, b)
what would be our coordinates. (0, 1), Sir.

Great Job, let’s give _____ 3 claps.

Now, plot all the points we get on the

Cartesian plane, and then connect them
to form a graph.

And that is the graph of y=2x+1 using x

and y intercepts. Did you get it?
Another Example

2. Find the x and y intercepts of the

equation 4x-3y=12 and graph it on the
Cartesian plane.
Let y=0, and solve for the value of x
4x - 3y = 12
4x - 3(0) = 12
4x - 0 = 12
4x = 12
4x/4 = 12/4
x=3
point : (3,0)
Let x=0 and solve for the value of y
4x - 3y = 12
4(0) – 3y = 12
0 – 3y = 12
-3y = 12
-3y/-3 = 12/-3
y=-4
point : ( 0, - 4 )

You all did a great job. Please give (the student will clap)
yourselves a round of applause.

D. Application

Go to your respective group, form a

small circle and bring out your white
board and marker.

Let’s call this game “Find My

Intercepts”

This is how the game works, I will post

certain equation on the board and you
will solve for its x and y intercept.

It is a quiz bee type game, so, if your

group got the answer, with a solution
that is written on your white board,
stand up and shout your group name.

If upon checking, your answer is

correct, you will get points that vary on
the difficulty of the equation.

The group that has the most Yes, Sir.

accumulated points at the end will win
the game. Is that clear?

Are you ready? Aye! Aye! Captain.

E. Generalization

Let’s have a recap. What is the method

of graphing linear equation that we
discussed earlier?

really understand the topic.

F. Values Integration

How can you associate intercepts in our

life?

For me, the LINE represents my life, it

doesn’t matter if the path I follow is
going up or going down. What matters
most is that I know my POINTS and
purposes in this God-given life. As long
as I have it, that would be fine.

IV. Evaluation
Graph the following linear equation by finding its x and y intercepts.

1. 2x + y = 8

2. x = y + 5

3. 5x = 10 – 2y

V. Assignment
