for speed in Top Gun: Maverick,
next year’s sequel to his high-flying

McGillis is AWOL as Cruise’s steamy
love interest. She wasn’t asked to
return, nor has she seen the film’s
much-viewed trailer. She also hasn’t

“I’ve spoken to a couple of people
occasionally, but the truth is, movies
are very odd work situations, because
you have a lot of people who come
together from all different parts of
the world,” says Kelly, 62. A mother of
two grown daughters, she settled in
North Carolina, where “my priority
became raising my girls.” Her last

hen Ba rba-
ra Stanwyck
shot the cli-
max of 1953’s
Titanic in a
giant outdoor
tank of water, “it was bitter cold, and
I was 47 feet in the air in a lifeboat
swinging,” she said. “I looked down
and thought, If one of these ropes
snaps now, it’s goodbye for you. Then
I thought about the men and women
who’d been through this thing. We
were recreating an actual tragedy,
and I shook with great racking sobs
and couldn’t stop.”
It was just this rare combination
of physical toughness and emotion-
al vulnerability that made Barba-
ra such a powerful presence on- and
offscreen. Starting Aug. 16, the
Criterion Channel will spotlight
11 films she made between 1930 and
1934, before the Hays Code of cen-
sorship restricted on-screen behav-
ior. In rarely seen titles like Night
Nurse and Baby Face, “she’s always
this sense of inner pain,” Imogen
Sara Smith, a film historian who will
provide commentary for the mar-
athon, tells Closer. “Both of those
came out of her childhood.”
THE MIRACLE WOMAN
Born into poverty in 1907 Brook-
lyn, Ruby Stevens (she later changed
her name to sound classier) lost her
mom in a streetcar accident in 1911.
Her dad soon abandoned the family,
and Barbara was raised in a series of
grim foster homes. She had an abor-
tion at 15 that left her unable to have
kids, and all these experiences, says
Smith, “led to a great sense of self-
reliance and an extraordinary drive.”
That strength came across in
her performances, as she navigat-
ed a career encompassing screwball
comedies, film noirs, Westerns and
prime-time soaps. She made 85 films
in 38 years, then when roles dried up
for women of her age, she launched a
successful TV career in her 50s. On
shows like The Big Valley, “she was
one of the few actresses who chose
ing to hold on to play-
ing younger roles.”
Holding on to a man
proved harder. Her first
love, actor Rex Cherryman,
died of septic poisoning at 31. She
wed another actor, Frank Fay, and
their stormy marriage inspired
A Star Is Born. “Their levels of suc-
cess and status completely re-
versed,” explains Smith. “And he had
a terrible drinking problem.” They
adopted a son, Dion, but Barbara was
estranged from him for nearly his
entire life. “Some kids are born with
bad blood, just like horses,” she said.
Her final marriage was to mati-
nee idol Robert Taylor, who was four
years her junior. “The boy’s got a lot
to learn, and I’ve got a lot to teach,”
she quipped. But he cheated on her,
and they divorced in 1951.
She threw herself into her ca-
reer and kept acting, starring on The
Colbys only a few years before her
death at 82 in 1990. “Work was her
life,” says Smith. Thirty years after
her passing, for women of indepen-

musical adapta-
tion Hello, Dolly!…or playfully clash-
ing with her over the choreography.
“Barbra said to [director] Gene Kelly,
‘He needs to go here. I’ve got to be on
that side,’” Michael, 77, tells Closer. “I
said, ‘I haven’t got enough time to get
there, and you look just the same on
this side.’ She said, ‘What a mouth! He
looks so innocent.’ She was great —
we got on very well.”
It was a light moment in an often

tense production that was the most
expensive musical ever made at the
time. Stars Walter Matthau and Bar-
bra squabbled, and there were cost-
ly production delays. Though no
one could sing Jerry Herman’s 1964
Broadway score like Barbra (and
she got a Golden Globe nomina-
tion for the role), many felt she was
miscast as a middle-aged, widowed
matchmaker who pursues a “half-
millionaire” played by Walter. Sur-
prisingly, even Barbra agreed. “I did
feel that Dolly was the story of old-
er people and they should hire Eliz-
abeth Taylor to play her,” she said.
Others pined for Tony winner Carol
Channing, who originated the role
on Broadway. “But when everybody
seemed against me,” said Barbra, “I
took up the challenge.”
Michael Craw ford won over
dance legend Gene Kelly more eas-
ily. “Gene got up on a coffee table,
did a few steps and invited me on it.
I thought, this is the most exciting
thing in my life,” he recalls. “He did
four or five steps and asked, ‘Can you
do that and count to four? If you can
count to four, you can dance.’”
A bigger challenge was a grumpy
Walter Matthau, who was quoted as
telling Barbra she didn’t have “the
talent of a butterfly’s fart.” She re-

portedly gifted him with a bar of soap
“to wash your mouth out,” and they
faked their screen kiss near the end.
“I feel there was a professional ri-
valry or jealousy,” says Dolly historian
Richard Skipper (callondolly.com).
“She asked for a large trailer because
her son Jason [Gould] and nannies
were on set, and it was like, ‘Who does
she think she is?’ But I think it was all
on his end, not on hers.” And the film-
makers had bigger worries.
The 90-day shoot in 1968 that took
over Garrison, N.Y., was “so hot, the
asphalt on the street was melting and
dancers were sinking,” Skipper says.

he’s been a part of our lives for
four decades as the perpetually
unlucky Nikki Newman on
The Young and the Restless.
But even some hard-core soap
fans may not know that Melody
Thomas Scott started out as a child actress
with Sean Connery in Alfred Hitchcock’s
Marnie, or shared the silver screen with
John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. “I was
only 3 when I started. I was pushed into
the business…but I have to admit that I
loved it,” Melody, 63, reveals to Closer.
“I would have liked to have worked even
more.” Despite a sometimes stressful
youth and a brief 1979 marriage, she found
a healthy career-life balance when she
married her second husband, former Y&R
and current The Bold and the Beautiful
producer Edward Scott, in 1985 and raised
three daughters with him. Her world nearly
fell apart, however, when she suffered a
“complete neurological breakdown” in
2014 after taking a common antibiotic and
a steroid. Closer caught up with Melody to
talk about how her five grandkids helped
her recover, her upcoming memoir and the
truth about working with Alfred Hitchcock.
Can you believe you’ve been on Y&R for
40 years? How does it make you feel?
So blessed and so grateful. I’ve always been
quite the fatalist, and I feel it was certainly
my destiny, in the stars, or however you
want to put it. Life seemed to guide me in
the right directions, and I never worried
too much about making the right decision,
because I’ve always believed that I’ll go
where I’m supposed to.
How has the show changed for you?
In the ’80s, ’90s and until Bill Bell passed
[in 2005], we had his influence. He was our
[co-]creator and original head writer. We’ve
had great writers since then, but he was the
best in the business. And you can’t think
back without thinking about the hairdos, the
clothes, the shoulder pads — very Dynasty-
and Dallas-looking. They were a lot of fun!
You’ve had a lot of guest roles on shows
like The King of Queens and Castle. Why
keep Y&R as your home all this time?
I never really questioned it. I suppose as
long as one is happy where they are, they
don’t really think about going anywhere.
It’s always fun to do something else, but I’ve
never really had any intention of leaving. I’m
sure there were moments where I was mad
and thought about it, but it never happened.
That’s nice to hear — and lucky for us!
Yeah, what a blessing. Most people don’t feel
that way about a job after they’ve been there
10 years. And I’ve been there 40, and it’s like,
“What’s Nikki going to get into next?”
What was it like making 1964’s Marnie
as a kid with Alfred Hitchcock?
It was my first feature. He was a scary,

imposing guy. It was quite well known that
he loathed working with children, and didn’t
really know how to very well. He was very
demanding, never smiled, very gruff and
breathed loud. That’s scary to a kid.
How about your co-stars Tippi Hedren
and Sean Connery?
Oh, everyone else was lovely. It was just him
that was so cranky and moody.
She said, “Do Y&R, it’s just three
years, and you’ll have a lot of
fun.” So she won that battle,
and blessedly so. I invited
her to my 40th anniversary
party on the set in February.
She came — she’s 90 now —
and I was just so thrilled that
she could be there. The moral
is, always listen to your agent!
OTHER ROADS
“There are roles I turned
down that turned out to be the
biggest mistakes,” Melody tells
Closer. “Animal House — I had
to be topless in a scene, and
that wasn’t going to happen.
And I thought An Officer
and a Gentleman was in
such bad taste.”

You were also in John Wayne’s final film,
1976’s The Shootist. What was he like?
He was wonderful. Just bigger than life.
Shortly after flying into Carson City, [Nev.]
where we did the exteriors, he came out of
his trailer and was like a walking mountain,
a big grizzly bear, and just so warm and kind.
Did you enjoy your recurring role on
The Waltons as Ben’s girlfriend Darlene?
That was great, too. I had to give that role
up when I got Y&R, because I couldn’t be
a regular on both of them. It was sad to
leave The Waltons. We all had so much fun,
laughing and being silly, like our show now —
but we’re old folks being silly! [Laughs]
How’d you land the role of Nikki?
Just as any other part — interview, callback,
talent test. The funny thing is I really wasn’t
that excited about getting Y&R, because
that same week, I had gotten an NBC sitcom
pilot. I really wanted to do that, because I
love comedy, but my agent talked me out of it.
What happened to the pilot?
Never to be heard from again!
You said you would’ve liked to work
more as a kid. Why?
I don’t want to get into all this drudgery, but
I had a lot to escape from in my house, and
show business was the perfect escape. It will
be in my book [Always Young and Restless],
coming out in summer 2020.
In 2014 you wrote that you had a very
bad reaction to an antibiotic and a
steroid after a sinus infection…
I couldn’t walk. I lost my sense of taste. My
heart rate went so low when I was in the
hospital, they thought that I would die. Even
after I got out, I was still hallucinating, and
I wasn’t able to work for weeks. The medical
community said [around 0.01 percent] of
people might have this reaction. But seven
people we knew had had this same reaction.
Slowly I got better by going to an herbalist
and an acupuncturist and doing yoga.

Glad you’re well! How’s your family?

Jennifer’s directing The Bold and the
Beautiful and she’s the mother of twins.
Elizabeth has two little ones, so she’s taking it
easy now. Alex is a fashion designer who just
created a bridal line which is doing extremely
well. And we have five grandkids now!
The twins just turned 9 — one, James, just
qualified for the Junior Olympics! Ellie’s 3,
Fiero’s 2 and we have a 3-and-a-half-month-
old. They’re wonderful. It’s just so fulfilling,
but I’m pretty sure we’re getting busted when
they say “Grandma fed us cookies.” You want
free babysitting, that’s the deal!

What’s your favorite role?

Nikki, because that’s what led me to my
husband and my children. It gave me a new
family, on and off the set. This year will be
35 years with Edward.

How have you kept the magic with him?

People ask us, and we look at each other and
shrug our shoulders. It was fate. — Reporting

osanne Cash’s first paying
gig as a singer was with her
dad, country legend Johnny
Cash. “When I was a teen-
ager, he took me and my
sisters on the road, and we
would go out at the end of the show and sing
a song together,” Rosanne, 64, recalls. After
the show, “he would throw money at us. If he
played Vegas, we were too young to gamble,
but he’d say, ‘Go gamble! Go play the slots!’”
Johnny lived much of his life with reck-
less abandon, as depicted in the 2006 mov-
ie Walk the Line, which dramatized his drug
addiction, infidelity and law-break-
ing early days. But Rosanne saw
a sweeter side of her dad. “He

favorite flavor? “Peach,” says Rosanne. “He
would throw fresh peaches in.”
Despite his stern stage demeanor, John-
ny had a silly sense of humor at home. “He
was really funny,” Rosanne gushes. “He was
a practical joker. And he’d get down on the
floor with the kids. He loved babies.”
But Rosanne says the biggest misconcep-
tion about her flag-waving, America-loving
father was “that he was a right-winger — that
kind of narrow-minded, evangelical sort of
guy. He was so not that guy.”
In fact, his taste in music alone proved how
broad-minded he was. “He took my brother
[John Carter Cash] to see heavy metal
bands,” Rosanne says. “He listened to every-
thing and he had the widest, most ecumeni-
cal taste in music. He loved all music. It was
like Louis Armstrong said, there was only
good music and bad music.”
That openness was reflected in Johnny’s
later recordings, when he covered songs by
the likes of Nine Inch Nails and won a new
Johnny with daughters Rosanne,
Kathy and Cindy in 1962; he had
another girl with Vivian named
Tara (not pictured), born in 1961.

underlying ethos. “There was an expansive-
ness to his spirit that was unending,” says
Rosanne. “He had the mind of a truly great
artist. Sometimes it’s hard for truly great
artists to live in their body in the world.”
I STILL MISS SOMEONE
In the last months of Johnny’s life, after his
beloved second wife, June Carter Cash, had
passed away at 73 in May 2003, “he liked me
to read Psalms to him,” Rosanne says. “I’m
not religious, but I was happy to read them.
He had lost his sight at that point.”
Johnny died at 71 in September 2003, and
Rosanne attended Christmas Eve services a
few months later. She was inspired to adapt
a hymn she heard into a new song, writing,
“We’re all walking in that direction to go be-
hind that veil.” At that moment, she says, “I felt
a deep connection with my parents, who had

death by suicide, Charo and
her adult son planted a cherry
tree in his honor. “I am so
full of his love,” she wrote in
memory of Kjell Rasten, her
husband of 30 years. “This has overwhelmed
me with peace and love in my heart.”
Though he suffered from a rare skin con-
dition, Kjell seemed to be handling
it and never spoke of taking his life.
But the night before his death, “he
looked at me very strange like he
wanted to talk to me,” recalls Charo,
68, who found his body in an alley
near their Beverly Hills home on
the morning of Feb. 18. “I thought
he fell and I hugged him. I was full

eorge Takei had a flash-
back to his childhood dur-
ing World War II on the set
of AMC’s series The Terror:
Infamy. “When I saw the
replica of the internment
camp, I immediately recognized it,” George
says. “The mess hall, the cacophony, the
noise. It really took me back.”
The actor, 82, best known as Mr. Sulu on
Star Trek, has been spending a lot of time re-
flecting on this period of his life lately. In
addition to his role on The Terror: Infamy,
which takes place in a detention camp, he
wrote a graphic novel about his childhood,
They Called Us Enemy, which has become a
best-seller. “To tell this story is the comple-
tion of my life’s mission,” he tells Closer.
A KNOCK ON THE DOOR
George remembers the day his family became
among the 120,000 Japanese-Americans de-
tained by the U.S. government in the after-
math of Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbor
in 1941. “We saw two soldiers marching up
our driveway. Literally at gunpoint we were

ordered out of our home in Los Angeles,”
he recalls. “That was the beginning.”
In the camp, his parents tried to pro-
tect George, his brother and their baby
sister. “My father told me that we were Young George and his

George. “We remained a family, and I
credit that alone for keeping the scars
of our unjust imprisonment from deepening

“Jobs were very difficult. Housing was im-
possible. The hatred was still intense,” says
George, who recalls his sister, when con-
fronted with prejudice and malice, cry-
ing that she wanted to return “home” to the

prison camp. “Her whole life had been spent
behind barbed wire,” he says.

“I’M A sixth-generation Texan, even though I was born in California,”
Samuel Pack Elliott proclaimed. And with his classic cowboy
drawl, handlebar moustache and a machismo that seems like
second nature, it’s easy to believe him. But not everyone believed
in him when he was younger. “My father once said, ‘You haven’t got
a snowball’s chance in hell in Hollywood.’” And when he passed
away when Sam was 18, “he died thinking, ‘Man, this kid is going to
go down the wrong path.’ I think on some level that was either hard
on me or made me more focused in my resolve to have a career.” Of
course, Sam, who turns 75 on Aug. 9, has had that and more, thanks
to wife Katharine Ross and daughter Cleo. “The two things that I
wanted in my life were to have a movie career and to have a family.
And it’s an embarrassment of riches that I’ve got both.”
